Ed was born on October 17, 1937, in Erie, PA, the only child of Edward and Elizabeth (McAloon) Callahan. Moving to Connecticut at an early age, the family settled in Hartford where Ed attended St. Joseph School, Cathedral High and graduated from Hartford High School in 1955. He went on to become a proud graduate of the State University of New York Maritime College where he earned a bachelor's degree in Marine Transportation, a Third Mates License in the Merchant Marine and a Commission in the U. S. Naval Reserve.

After serving two years sea duty in the Pacific, Ed returned to the area, married Betty-Kay who he met in high school, and joined The Hartford as an Underwriting Trainee. He held various marine underwriting and management positions in Boston, New Orleans and Hartford and retired after 35 years as an Assistant Vice President.

Ed is survived by his three children, Kathleen McCarthy and her husband Patrick, of Middle Village, NY; Daniel Callahan of Newport Beach, CA; and Thomas Callahan and his wife Shauna, of Boulder, CO. Also surviving him are his beautiful grandchildren, Patrick McCarthy and Grace and Evan Callahan.

Ed was part of my tennis group for years. My strongest memory is of what a really nice person he was, typified by his insistence on following me home after a minor injury, just to make sure I was OK. A small gesture by a fine person, He will be missed
