To Ed's Family
I had the pleasure of working with Ed for over a year at the Wheeler Y and he was such a pleasure - a true professional and a joy. I am shocked but I know he passed doing what he truly enjoyed. I know he will be missed at the Y, especially by his clients.

Ed, although we worked together for nearly 20yrs, my fondest memories are when we'd meet up at the Eastside or the Berkshire and shoot the bull over some cold Sam Adams. We enjoyed arguing over the Yankees and the Red Sox, Patriots and Packers. I last saw you a couple of years ago and you seemed happy. I want to remember you that way. Rest in Peace.

Well Ed--(you are still Eddie to me), I have to say that today the best "send-off" to heaven anyone could have asked for! I know you were there but silent as usual in such a big crowd. I also know you were so proud though somewhat embarrassed to see all the people there to honor you. AMAZING! And your family--so strong just as you would have wanted---your parents, sisters and sons--so loving and kind and humble--Hmm--wonder where you got it from? I was so excited to see your handsome self at Tommy's fundraiser---I looked up and saw my hunky cousin with that beautiful smile! How could you miss it? So glad we got to talk for a few minutes that day. Thank you for that. God works in mysterious ways, doesn't he?
One more thing you should know--I am still holding you to that promise you made to me way back when in our "sessions" at Dr. Edelson's-- That bike better be ready the next time I see you because we ARE going for that long ride! So for now --I'll see you when I see you, OK? Love you!

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.
Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.
Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.
Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.
I saluted you Ed.

To Ed's Family:
I worked with Ed at the Wheeler Regional Family YMCA for over 4 years. He was a gentle giant. He was tall in stature, integrity and had a great sense of humor. He loved his family, his bike rides to Washington DC and sharing his knowledge of fitness with others. All of his personal training clients had the upmost respect for him and he made a difference in many lives. Josh, his nephew, works with us and he shares the same attributes. I am so proud to have worked with Ed! The only positive that I can get out of this tragedy is that he passed doing what he loved! He is definitely from good stock. Bob and Jane you did a great job!

I will not speak on Ed's character or how much he was loved by his friends and family. Those things are obvious. I can honestly only remember Ed smiling and having fun. I remember trips to Boston and a long ride to Vermont on a very cold day. I remember a lousy fisherman in goofy shorts making fun of himself. Most of all, like so many others, I remember always feeling good when Ed was around.
I have always looked up to you and always will. See you on the other side my friend.

Mr. Mercure was a truly great guy! I first met him years ago as a young child going to work with my father who worked with Ed for most his career at WHPD. Ill always remember Ed's Harley parked in the rear WHPD and how much he loved to ride! My deepest sympathy goes out to the Mercure family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To Ed's Family:
I can't tell you how sad I am to hear of Ed's death. He was my trainer at the Y-the gentle slave-driver who motivated me to get back into shape. He was a quiet, gentle soul with a very quick wit. I enjoyed our sessions despite the days of soreness that followed... He embraced life and was quick to enthuse about his family and how much he enjoyed being on the open road on a beautiful day on his bike. I am thankful for the time I had with him.

To all members of Ed's family and friends~
It is with a very heavy heart I write these words. My thoughts and prayers go out to all Ed's family and so many dear friends. Working with Ed at WHPD will always be a special memory and an honor. Ed was a quiet man but wore his heart on his sleeve. Ed truly cared very deeply for others although it may have been hard to get through his tough exterior. When we would spend time talking, at length many days, I would smile days later from his comical expressions. Ed was a good friend to many; a friend you could truly count on. To all Ed's family and to so many friends, my prayers will be with you as well as the great loss we share. Ed, you will remain in my memory with wonderful thoughts until we meet again and can spend time laughing and joking. I send my love to a loving and caring man whose love remains alive in the hearts of so many. May God give strength and peace to all who are suffering this tremendous loss.

Dear Mercure Family,
A friend called me this morning to say that Ed passed away and I'm still in shock. One of the nicest people you could ever meet and one of the best in a tight situation.
He never changed from the day he started in Avon to the day he retired from West Hartford. Ed was a man of integrity who did not fear the reprisals of speaking one's mind or standing on the side of right over wrong.
A real cop with a heart of gold!
God bless you all and may you all find peace in Ed's memories.

R.I.P. brother! I miss you already and can't believe that you're actually gone. Your sister called me yesterday since she saw my text in your phone. Thanks for sending me one last message after you were gone. God must have needed one more warrior in Heaven, we all know that you fit that bill! I was proud to know that you considered me a friend and you taught me so much. The last thing you asked me was to wish you luck for the job on Monday...who knew? You lived life with dignity and you died riding the bike you loved so much. Words can't express the sorrow that I feel, but thanks again for one last call from your phone. YOUDAMAN!

Dear Mercure Family,
I have been blessed with this wonderful family in my life since I can remember. Although I did not get see Ed often, I was always kept updated on lifes events. Ed was so smart, handsome, strong and full of integrity. I remember in the early days of PARC, that all the gang there just loved ED. My heart goes out to you all of you at this time and in the days ahead. Love you all.

Ed, space and time constraints prevent me from recounting all of the qualities that made you such a special man. I know that as a cop, you were level headed, loyal, dedicated and honorable. We worked together for 20 years, the first 13 as squad mates, we shared our thoughts many a midnight shift, and as the faces changed, we became the old timers, you, me, Dennis, others too may to name. A better back-up there never was. You wore the uniform with dignity and pride, and you possessed the two greatest qualities that good cops must have, compassion and common sense. Keep a place for me so when we get back together we can share more laughs. You are already sadly missed.

My uncle Ed was everything I could hope to be as a man. He led his life with quiet dignity, and an overwhelming love of his family. Most people know my uncle as the ultimate "tough guy" and he certainly was that-quiet, strong, reserved. I feel fortunate to have known another side, one of compassion and a great sense of humor. I couldn't be more proud of my uncle, and hope that Matt and Kev know that they have an army of love and support behind them.

Edward Mercure was a man amongst men. If Ed considered you his friend you were truly blessed. Quiet, strong and unquestioned integrity are just a few adjectives that describe Ed. My friend, I know that you are with God's 82nd Airborne now. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to Eds family, especially his sons who he loved so dearly. Badge 154, you were there for me in my darkest hour and I will never forget that. God bless you! I will see you on the other side my brother. HOOAH!

To The Mercure Family:
All of you are in my thoughts at this most difficult time. I first met Ed, in 1989, when I was a probationary / rookie officer with the West Hartford Police Department. I had the pleasure of working with Ed for several years, being that we were assigned to the same Patrol Squad. Ed knew the job well, he did it well, and I learned alot from him. We would sit cruiser to cruiser many days / and nights, and just talk. I always enjoyed working calls with Ed, because if you were with Ed, he always "had your back" and you weren't going to get hurt. I feel blessed to have known him, and worked with him. When the "Gentle Giant" decided to retire, I was happy for him, and I knew he was ready to move on. My deepest sympathy to the Mercure family.

I will miss Ed's smile and laugh. Working with him was great fun and he always treated everyone with respect. He was well liked as a cop and a person.
I know how much he loved his Harley and I had the privilige to ride with him several times. The most memorable time was when I was one person away from winning a brand new Sportster but good ole Ed won it. I ended up with the consolation prize, a hat. We had a great laugh over it.
He will be missed greatly. Another life taken too early.
My prayers go to Ed's family.

There are no words to express the sorry we feel for your loss. The pictures of Eddie and the beautiful summary of his life make it even harder to understand why. May you find peace in the arms of one another and in all of the friends you have gathered over the years. May your memories keep you company. May God take care of you all until you can stand under the weight of your own thoughts.
