Gerald Hoffman Obituary

HOFFMAN, Gerald F. Gerald F. Hoffman, 71, a lifelong resident of the village of Broad Brook in East Windsor, passed away at Hartford Hospital surrounded at his bedside by his loved ones on Saturday, (November 18, 2006) after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Broad Brook on 7/14/35 and is the 3rd son of the late Andrew Sr. and Margaret (Flaherty) Hoffman. Gerald served his country with the Connecticut Air National Guard in Granby and retired as Fire Chief after 38 years of service. He was also a retired Fire Chief of the Broad Brook Volunteer Fire Department and one of his many accomplishments was his involvement and initiation of the Junior Fire Division in 1971. He was also instrumental in the activities leading up to the building of the Fire Safety Complex which houses the Broad Brook Fire Department and Senior Center. Gerald was instrumental in the drafting and presentation of the Bill before the Connecticut Legislature for the planning and building of the present-day Connecticut Fire Academy at Bradley International Airport. He served as an instructor of aircraft rescue and firefighter courses, as well as coordinator of military training. He was a parishioner of St. Catherine Church, Broad Brook; a member of the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association; and the Liedertafel Singing Society (German Club); and the Connecticut Air National Guard Non-Commissioned Officers Club "The Zebra Club, Inc." In his younger years, he was involved in church minstrels, serving as "end" man. He worked with Father Joseph Rice with the renovations of the church basement in the early 1950's. Also, as a young boy, he and his Uncle Bill Flaherty planted a victory garden. He was also an outstanding athlete on the Ellsworth High School Track Team, holding a record for the hundred yard dash in 1952. Gerald's greatest joy was time spent with Germaine (Allard) Hoffman, his beloved wife of 34 years and his 5 children, daughters Amy (Hoffman) and her husband Dan Pinder of Palm City, FL; Denise (Long) and her husband Lawrence Woodward of Mansfield; sons Douglas and his wife Nancy (Daniele) Hoffman of Enfield; Brian and his wife Wendy (Terry) Long of Windsor Locks; and Steven and his wife Christina (Haverstick) Long of Broad Brook; and his 12 grandchildren: Nicole (Pinder) and her husband Nicolas Cyr of Cape Coral, FL; Jenny Pinder of Miami, FL, John Pinder of Palm City, FL; Courtney Hoffman and Kristen Hoffman of Enfield; Jamie Long, Joseph Long and Justina Long of Broad Brook; Michael Long, Austin Long and Alexis Long of Windsor Locks, and predeceased by granddaughter Caitlyn Long. Gerald is also survived by brothers, Andrew Jr. and his wife Patricia (Sherburne) Hoffman and Barry Hoffman, and sister, Margaret C. Hoffman, all of Broad Brook. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and a good and faithful friend to many. He loved his restful trips to Brookline Vermont, fly fishing, carpentry, gardening and bird watching. His family wishes to thank all his caregivers at Windsor Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, especially Dr. Peter Schauer of the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center in Hartford, for outstanding care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. in St. Catherine Church, Broad Brook. The family asks everyone to go directly to church. There are no visiting hours. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery with military honors. Family will receive relatives and friends at a reception following the committal service at the Liedertafel Singing Society (German Club) 75 Depot Street, Broad Brook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Gerald's honor may be made to either, Broad Brook Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 328, Broad Brook or St. Catherine Church P.O. Box 359, Broad Brook CT 06016. The Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St., East Windsor has care of arrangements. Miss you, Dad. Happy Father's Day in Heaven. We love you and think of you every day.

November 15, 2007

As the one-year anniversary of Dad's passing approaches, and the holidays near, the pain has not subsided. The memories, however, become stronger and clearer. His gentle touch providing security, his words of encouragement and pride, his goofy jokes, hearty laugh, and love for his family and life are still fresh in my mind. He was my friend, confidant, and "best dad". There is an emptiness without him, but comfort in his presence. He was our glue, and he would want us to stick together; family was everything to him. I miss him so much. We'd call each other to look at the moon from FL and CT at the same time. I look at the moon now and know we are still looking at it together. He touched so many people. This guest book will cease very soon. May we continue to honor Dad by loving each other as he loved us, remembering what he taught us, keeping our memories fresh, and sharing his simple goodness.

I knew Jerry (The Chief) the entire 12 years I spent in the fire house at Bradley Field. He was a great friend, and a wonderful mentor. Many of the management and people skills I use today, I learned from listening to and watching Jerry. When on a deployment you knew it was going to be a little better because he was along. I am very sorry to hear that he is gone.

My sincere condolences for the loss of your husband, grandpa and brother. I knew Jerry as a young guy mowing lawns for Barry and later on sharing a few beers at the German Club. He was always serving either the National Guard, the fire department or his family. Although brief, I am glad I had the opportunity to know such a nice man.

Germaine and Family,
Words cannot express my sympathy to you and your family at this difficult time. Gump was a wonderful man, fellow fire fighter, husband and father who always had a great story or two to share with me while I was the permittee at the German Club in Broad Brook. I'll never forget his face when I gave him my grandfathers pipe cabinet and canister, it was a difficult piece of furniture to part with, but I knew gump would use it and he was honored to have it. I know Stu has a great friend with him right now to romp the heavens and we have one of the greatest Angles looking down upon us. God Bless you and your family as my thoughts are prayers are with you all.

Germaine, MaryLou and I send our deepest condolences. We both have years of fond memories of The Chief to keep us smiling. When Gerry was joining us on a deployment, we knew it was going to be a "little" bit more enjoyable. His smile would lighten up a room and his laugh would make the sad smile. He will be missed by us on earth, but heaven will have their happiest angel.

Thank you for allowing him be part of our lives.

Gerry was my grandfather, the best grandpa I could have ever asked for. I know I can speak for all my cousins when I say that he was the funniest grandpa around too. He'd always stop at the drop of a hat to play with us and to keep us entertained. I can't even put into words how I feel about this man. Grandpa: I miss you so much and I'll always be thinking about you. Watch over us, we love you so much.

Germaine - Please accept the condolences of the entire Air National Guard Fire Protection family at the loss of Jerry. We all have very fond memories of the time that we spent together. The ANG Fire Chiefs Association is less now because of Jerry's loss. While he may not have had a direct impact on the 3,500 fire fighters in the ANG, he certainly had in indirect impact in his selfless dedication to the Air Guard and to our career field. He was an instrumental member of the Guard. His guidance and direction will be missed. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dear Brian and Wendy,

We were very sorry to hear about your Dad. He was a great man. Everyone who knew him loved him.

I have really missed his visits at the Academy and seeing him from time to time in other places.

My Dad enjoyed many hours with him, and always asks for him. He was also very sad to hear of his passing.

You are in our thoughts. If it is any consolation, you can rest assured that he is enjoying many of his former friends and family, and he is at peace and without pain.

To a man who made me feel like I was his own daughter. You are the kindess man I have ever met. Although my days were spent with you when I was younger they have always stayed in my heart. A reminder......Broad Brooke Fair. Winning my 20 cartons of smokes. Bingo.......firemen. What a great time. You sir will always be in my heart and in my prayers. Your family is strong, and that they got from you. I will miss you. I will always be the best of friends with you daughter Amy. We have kept that friendship going because of you. You showed us when we were younger how important family and friends were to have in your life. For this I thank you. I will see you again. I will have my arms open and will enjoy the big hug that you will give me. Rest now, enjoy, and feel free of you pain. I do love you for the lessons you taught me while I was a child. Thank you. My dad ... my hero. He was just a good-hearted, down-to-earth, no-nonsense, nice guy. He saw the good in everyone and possessed more patience than anyone I have ever seen. He was fun to be with; always had a joke and wouldn't hesitate to tell it, even when he should have waited. He was the best listener in the world. He and I would sit at the table until 5 a.m. solving all the problems of the world ... eating crackers and his home-made jelly. He introduced us to pickled lamb's tongue, pig's feet, and beef jerky. He probably would not have been one of PETA's favorite persons ... until they got to know him. He was a gardener and a craftsman. He taught us to drive ... that's where his patience kicked in ... only time I heard my dad scream was from the passenger seat once. I could go on and on. But we all have our special memories of Dad. Family was what it was all about with Dad. And if you were his friend, it was forever. I was blessed to have been his daughter, he will forever be my best dad. There is an empty place on earth ... and a whole lotta fun and rejoicing goin' on in Heaven.
