Glenn Huffer Obituary

Glenn Huffer, 83, of Vernon CT passed away on June 18, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Born June 17, 1936 in Middletown Md, he was the son of the late Fred M. and Pearl Main Huffer. Outgoing and good at explaining how things worked, Glenn began his career as an appliance salesman at Better Homes in Fredrick Md. In 1967, he was offered a job in Connecticut as a Territory Sales Manager at Westinghouse and the Frigidaire until his retirement in 1998. Tiring of making blueberry pies and serving as the self-appointed Neighborhood Watch, he came full circle re-entering the Appliance Sales Business at Holloways in Simsbury where he worked on Saturdays. Every Christmas you could count on a box of his delicious peanut brittle and homemade egg nog. A list of the things Glenn loved would include: movies, peanuts, shrimp, the New York Yankees, George Dickel, and Bluegrass - not necessarily in that order. Speaking of Bluegrass - when he relocated to Connecticut, Glenn brought his Dobro and love of Bluegrass with him. In the 70's he played with "Sounds of Bluegrass" and in 1980 he helped form "Connecticut Friends of Bluegrass". For 30 plus years he emceed throughout Connecticut and New York. In his early twenties, Glenn served his country by spending eight years in the Maryland National Guard discharged with the rank of Staff Sargent. Glenn is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol (Bradley) , his daughter Kathie Schultz ( Peter) , his stepsons David Cubit (Mary) , Darren Cubit (Sharon) and his stepdaughter Caren Fogarasi (Mike). He is also survived by two Grandchildren, 7 step Grandchildren and five Great Grandchildren, one sister, Kathleen Wyand (David) and many nieces and nephews. Glenn was predeceased by one brother Elwood Huffer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNHSC Hospice team, 71 Haynes St., Manchester, CT 06040. Relatives and friends may join the family on Saturday, June 29, 2019 from 12-2 PM at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville with a memorial service to follow at 2 PM. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. For online condolences, please visit www.pietrasfuneralhome.com

Glenn, ole buddy, I'm going to miss you. I'll always remember John Brown's Bluegrass nights, and swapping Dobro licks with you whenever we got together. Smoky Joe always thought the world of you too, 'cause you were always a true friend. Tonight I'll get out the Dobro and play "Fireball" like we used to. RIP ......

Sad news once again in our world of music...Glenn, was a strong supporter of so much of what I did in the music and it was greatly appreciated. I loved to see him smile as Joe DeLillo and I belted out some of those old Buzz Busby tunes, which so few people knew, but he did, and loved them! Rest In Peace Mr. Huffer, the Angel Band needs an MC! "You'll not be stranger!"
To Glenn's family, condolences to you all, so sorry for your loss of this wonderful man.

Glenn was instrumental in supporting and promoting bluegrass music in Connecticut He took over and ran the Haddam Neck Bluegrass Festival. He then promoted bluegrass shows with The Johnson Mountain Boys, The Osborne Brothers, Dry Branch Fire Squad, The Seldom Scene and many others at the Colchester Lodge and then the Mason's Hall in Norwich. I spent many an evening at Glenn & Carol's house stuffing flyers for shows He was very supportive of our band, booking us to open for The Johnson Mountain Boys and others. He will be sorely missed

Carol and family and friends of Glenn...I would like to extend my condolences to you for the loss of Glenn. I have so many fond memories of listening to Glenn's stories of bluegrass and bluegrass pioneers during visits and picking sessions with Glenn and Kevin Lynch and Paul Harvey. Carol was always standing by with a smile. Glenn would have a gleam in his eye when he would bring out treasured cassette tapes of early bluegrass festivals down south. He was always so excited to share them with eager listeners. He LOVED THe Jonson Mountain Boys, and he helped Traver Hollow along the way by inviting us to open for countless bluegass performers in Connecticut. In addition to promoting bluegrass,he was also MC at many bluegrass festivals Such a wonderful loving person. Great memories of a fine man. Love you Carol.

Glenn is a legend in bluegrass music promotion in Connecticut. He had a love of traditional bluegrass and had a knack for knowing a good band when he heard it. I enjoyed emceeing with Glenn at Strawberry Park in Preston CT for several years until he could no longer attend. Godspeed to a good man.
