Gordon Fowler Obituary

Gordon Fowler, Sr., 89 of Bloomfield, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully on June 2, 2023 in Hartford, CT. Born in Bronxville, NY on April 10, 1934, and raised in Scarsdale, NY, Gordon graduated from St. Paul's School in 1953 and Princeton University in 1957. He earned a Masters degree from Columbia Business School in 1958. Gordon met Mary "Molly" Rulon-Miller during high school and the couple married in 1957 shortly after graduating from college. The couple moved to West Hartford after school where Gordon worked for Cigna and predecessor companies in the investment department for almost his entire career.

Gordon was a very low-key individual who was habitually kind and self sacrificing. He lived in the quiet service of others and only moderately for himself – a gentlemen by deed rather than for show.

Gordon was dedicated to his family, in particular Molly, his wife of 65 years. Gordon enthusiastically supported Molly's career as a fiber artist and an active gardener often using his mechanical skill and imagination to construct devices that would assist these efforts including a felting machine in the basement and a wood chuck barrier around the vegetable garden. As Molly's memory deteriorated and she moved into the memory care unit, Gordon was a daily visitor to the center joining Molly for meals twice a day and becoming an uplifting and valued presence in this small community.

Gordon had a lifelong interest in economics and politics, joyfully believing in the societal benefits of free markets, supporting the ability of people to make their own choices, and opposing most American war involvement. He taught his family that it was best to engage people who didn't share his views with respect, intelligence, and wit. His community work included leading the West Hartford Taxpayers Association where he regularly analyzed town budgets and spoke at town meetings. He also served on the board of Cedar Hill Foundation and the Board of Directors of Duncaster.

Gordon is survived by his wife Molly; his sons, Gordon Fowler, Jr. (Patricia) and Douglas Fowler (Jodie); his granddaughters, Genevieve Fowler, Kelly Freund Wichlinski (Adam) and grandsons, Gordon Michael Fowler and Andrew Fowler.
