QUIRK, Irene E. Irene E. Quirk, 89, of Sand Hill Road, Middletown, died Saturday (June 5, 2010) at Cromwell Heath Care. She was born in Middletown on June 24, 1920, the daughter of the late Frank and Edith (Pedden) Quirk. Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Stanley Works in New Britain after many years of service. Irene was an avid bowler, enjoyed the outdoors and blueberry picking in Glastonbury, spent many hours in her flower garden and enjoyed mowing the lawn. One of her favorite pass-times was driving her car. She would pick up her cousin, Catherine and her friends Ann and Betty for a drive, to an unknown destination and stop for lunch. She knew all of the routes and roads of Connecticut and enjoyed taking her friends on road trips. Irene was a special aunt, she will be missed by her nieces. Irene and her sister, Mary planned special birthday outings when the nieces were young. She took them on shopping trips to G. Fox in Hartford to pick out a spring outfit and birthday lunches at Brown Thompson or the Ferry Tavern on the shoreline. There were holiday trips to New York to see the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall, a night out to see South Pacific at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford and trips to Hammonaset State Park and Miegs Point for an afternoon swim and picnic lunch. She has left her nieces with many precious memories. She is survived by two brothers; Robert Quirk of Middletown and his four daughters, and Thomas Quirk of Coral Gables, FL, and his two daughters. She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Quirk, a sister; Mary Sullivan. Funeral services are private and burial will be in St. John Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
