James Furey Obituary

James A. Furey, 83, of Riverview St., Enfield, a retired Business Teacher at Enfield High School, died Thursday (September 11, 2003) at the Parkway Pavilion in Enfield. Jim was a real gentleman, loved and respected by all who knew him. Born on Nov. 23, 1919 in Warehouse Point, son of the late James and Mary (Maloney) Furey, he had been a resident of the Enfield community for most of his life and was a communicant of Holy Family Church. Jim began his teaching career at the former Ellsworth High School in South Windsor at the age of 22. He taught there for several years before joining his uncle in the operation of the Cahill Tobacco Farm. Jim returned to the teaching profession in the Business Department at Enfield High School during the 1960's. During his 25 year career at Enfield High, he also served as the Audio-Visual coordinator for the faculty and as a member of the Graduation Committee. Throughout his teaching career, Jim was highly respected by the staff, administration and the community. Anthony Torre, a longtime colleague and present Assistant Superintendent of Enfield Public Schools described Jim as very effective with students and stated Jim was an active volunteer, always there to assist others. We could always rely on Jim. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Shirley (Maj) Furey; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Michon and her husband, Leon, of Trumbull and Ilene VanEmburgh and her husband, Donald, of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves several wonderful neighbors. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church, 23 Simon Rd., Enfield. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Windsor Locks. His family will receive relatives and friends at the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Parkway Pavilion Healthcare, Resident Council, 1157 Enfield Street, Enfield, CT 06082.
