James Scott Obituary

James Joseph Scott, 62, of New Britain, Connecticut, husband of Nancy Sellman Scott, passed away Thursday (March 26, 2015) at his home. Born and raised in Scranton, Pennslyvania, Jim was the son of the late John J. and Mary T. Scott. A graduate of Scranton Preparatory School, Jim received a BAE degree in Architectual Engineering from Penn State University, class of 1976, and an MBA in Marketing from Wayne State University in 1979. Jim took pride in being an Eagle Scout in high school and sitting on the Borough of State College Planning Committee while at college. A Professional Engineer in the state of Connecticut, Jim's business career started with The Stanley Works, where he was Vice President of Marketing for Stanley Magic Door and a past president of the Stanley Forum. He was President of Locknetics Security Engineering from 1989-1999 and enjoyed the challenges of leading a growing business. He was next with Ingersoll Rand, where he worked as Executive Director, Enterprise Sales and Marketing, and as a member of the Corporate Leadership Team. Jim's most recent position was as Director of Growth and Innovation for Actuant Corporation, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. While in Wisconsin, Jim was a founding member of the Milwaukee Growth and Innovation Round Table. Jim has had a long commitment to his local community, including as a founding board member of M.O.M.S. teen pregnancy support program; board member of Catholic Family Chapter, New Britain, CT; member of the Board of Directors of Okay Industries; and as a past President of Shuttle Meadow Country Club. Regionally, Jim was a past President of the Connecticut World Affairs Council; Chairman of the University of Hartford Construction Institute; and Vice Chairman of U.S. Department of Commerce District Export Council. In 1997, Jim was an honored recipient of the President of the United States E' Award for excellence in exporting. Jim is survived by his wife Nancy, beloved daughters Megan Scott of Los Angeles, CA, and Taryn Scott Pike and her husband Jeffrey of Brookline, MA; his sister Terri O'Rourke and her husband John of Merion, PA and their children Ryan, Cara, John and Corey; his brother Jeffrey of Sarasota, FL and his wife Sue and their daughter Nicole; brother-in-law David Sellman of LaGrange, GA and his wife Ann and children David and Kathryn; his brother-in-law Bryan Sellman of New Hartford, CT; and father-in-law Nils D. Sellman of Simsbury, CT. Jim loved to learn and as both a student and teacher of all things, he was always eager to share his knowledge and skills with anyone interested in learning. Known as a creative thinker and solution maker, he never liked hearing "it can't be done". Jim knew there was an answer, generally found from an uncommon route, and he took great pleasure in the process, not only the end result. He had a contact list that would rival many, one that came from his desire to stay connected and remember the many people that he met throughout the course of his life. Fly fishing, golf, and home renovation projects gave him great enjoyment. At the end of the day, Jim's greatest satisfaction came from spending time with his family, friends, and admired colleagues. Friends are invited to join the family directly at St. Maurice Church, 100 Wightman Road, New Britain, Wednesday at 11 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4 to 7 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. Memorial donations may be made to the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut, 183 North Mountain Road, New Britain, CT 06050.
