DAY, Jane E. Jane E. Day, age 92, of Stamford, formerly of New Canaan, died Tuesday, (January 30, 2007) at Stamford Hospital. Born in Detroit, Ml., May 19, 1914, she was the eldest of the six children of Guy F. and Anna L. Bigelow Allen. Jane was the beloved wife of the late James Day. She is survived by her five children, Dorothy (Jerry) Funk of Honaunau, Hl., Mary (Dan) Whitehurst of Redmond, WA., Sally Day of Oro Valley, AZ., Barbara (Ray) Galloway of Haddam, and William (Susi) Day of Adliswil, Switzerland; ten adored grandchildren and eleven equally loved great grandchildren. Jane is also survived by a brother, William F. Allen of Graniteville, SC; and a sister, Evelyn (James) Sewell of Ocala, FL. She was predeceased by two sisters and one brother. Jane was raised in the Detroit area and graduated from Alma College, Alma, Ml., where she met her future husband. She taught Library Science for one year prior to marrying and moving to Midland, Ml., where the couple built their first house and started their family. In 1953 the family moved to Stamford, where they resided until 1977 when Jane and Jim moved to New Canaan, for their retirement years. In 1999, Jane returned to Stamford, moving in to the newly opened Edgehill Senior Living Retirement Community, following the death of her husband of 62 years. Jane had been an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Stamford since 1953. She was involved in Circle 4, Sunday School teaching, the Bell Choir, rummage and other sales, and was one of the few chosen to create the needlework designs on altar hangings and vestment stoles. She was a talented seamstress and needle worker, sewing, knitting, and crocheting for her family and for charitable causes over many years. Jane and Jim were long term members of the Woodway Country Club in Darien, where they enjoyed the camaraderie of good friends, playing golf and bowling. In later years, Jane enjoyed Sunday Brunches there with a group of special friends. Jane volunteered for many years for the American Red Cross in Stamford, working in the office and at blood drives. She and her husband enjoyed road trips to visit family and friends across the U.S., as well as world travel. Jane will be remembered by her family and friends for her even temperament, patience, cheerfulness, will fondly quiet wisdom, and grace. Her children remember their wonderful mother with her beautiful clear blue eyes, lovely smile, and halo of snow white hair. Jane's family wishes to extend a very special thank you to her exceptional private healthcare aides from Compassionate Care, lnc. of Stamford and to the wonderful staff of Edgehill, who took such good care of her in her final years. There will be a private family service and interment at Lakeview Cemetery in New Canaan. A public memorial service will be held Saturday, February10, at 2 p.m. at Edgehill, 122 Palmer's Hill Road, Stamford. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those wishing to do so to make a donation in her name to a charity of their choice. The Hoyt Funeral Home, New Canaan has charge of arrangements.
