CARPENTER, Jeffrey A.
Jeffrey A. Carpenter, 42, passed away at his home in Manhattan on February 24, 2013. Jeff, beloved son of Kenneth A. and Donna M. (O'Connor) Carpenter of Wethersfield, CT, was born in Bridgeport on April 27, 1970. He had fond memories of growing up in Stratford, CT where he attended Wilcoxson Elementary, Flood Intermediate, and Bunnell High School. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and inductee of Phi Beta Kappa, Jeff went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He was Managing Editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Technology in 1998. Prior to attending Harvard, Jeff served as a paralegal with Ford Marrin Esposito Witmeyer & Gleser, and after passing the New York State bar examination spent five years with Proskauer Rose LLP. Most recently, Jeff practiced with the firm Bragar Eagel & Squire, PC. Jeff also expressed his great artistic and technical talents as a professional photographer, music producer, and web design consultant. In addition to his parents, he leaves to mourn his loving brother Kenneth J. Carpenter and Ken's wife Anita Carpenter of West Hartford; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and many, many close friends. Jeffrey was exuberant, intelligent, generous, optimistic, creative, fearless, intensely loyal, and had a brilliant sense of humor. The friends Jeff kept close throughout life included those he met in early childhood and at every age after, and usually a single encounter was enough to make an indelible impression on those he met. His memory will also live in the relationships among his many friends who then became close friends themselves. He deeply loved living in Manhattan, but also always returned from travels excited about the places he visited and people he met.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Oronoque Country Club, 385 Oronoque Lane, Stratford, CT. Anyone wishing may make donations "In Memory of Jeffrey A. Carpenter" to Frank Scott Bunnell High School, 1 Bulldog Blvd., Stratford, CT 06614, or the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005 or www.heart.org. To the Carpenter family -- my sincerest condolensces go out to you. Although I lost touch with Jeff over the past 20 years or so, spending only the briefest of time reminiscing with him at our class reunion, I have very fond memories of his friendship, from kindergarten, ALPS, and through high school. Sharing the majority of the same classes with him all those years, and enjoying great times outside of school has left an indelible mark on my childhood memories. Witty, intelligent, creative, caring -- I can't think of any better way to describe him. The world has lost a gem all too soon. May you be comforted by all the good he has left behind.

Jeff was the smartest, funniest person I have ever met. Beyond that, he was one of the few people in my life that I knew I could count on no matter what. His unexpected passing has saddened me beyond words. I pray you find comfort in knowing he will live on in the memories of the many, many people he touched during his journey. He truly was one of a kind, and I feel so very lucky to have known him.

My deepest condolences to the Carpenter family. I couldn't have asked for a better childhood friend than Jeff. I still have fond memories of growing up in Stratford and playing the several games that Jeff invented. He was the most creative and intelligent person that I have ever met. One of my biggest regrets was losing touch with him over the years. He will be greatly missed.

To the Carpenter Family, please accept by deepest condolences. I recall first meeting Ken's brother in the summer of 1987. He was a vibrant and engaging individual. The world is a lesser place without him.

Thank you all for this beautifully done obit. Jeff's early passing is such a loss to the world, but I am especially sorry for your personal loss of son and brother. Sadly, I had not seen Jeff for many years, but I am one of those you mention who knew Jeff from Bunnell High School and on whom he impacted so positively. For example, when I was a sophomore and he was a senior he passed along some brilliant insights for playing the piano that I have used ever since. R.I.P. Sir Jeff

Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter, and Ken and Anita, it is difficult to express the depth of my sorrow for your loss. Ever since meeting him 38 years ago, Jeff has been a wonderfully positive force in my life, an unwavering friend, and a truly unique human being who was brilliant, fun, funny, thoughtful, and humane. Christine and I will miss our best man dearly, and we thank you sincerely for sharing him with us.

I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the Carpenter family. I only just met Jeff back in the summer of 2011, but his personality & friendliness left quite am impression.
I have admired his work in photography since knowing him, something he was very skilled at.
His perspective on life, his outgoing nature, and his desire to do & see as much as this world has to offer was always inspirational to me.
I will remember him as a man who lived his life to the fullest, and someone who genuinely cared for the people around him.

I would like to offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Carpenter family. It wouldn't be an overstatement to describe Jeff as "genius"......he was that amazing and talented. He could have done anything he wanted to in this world - and with all of the impressive accomplishments to his credit, he apparently did. And despite all these many talents, he was a very humble, caring and compassionate individual. Although his time was far too short, he was rare among us in living life to its fullest. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
