CONDRON, John J., Sr.
John Joseph Condron Sr., 91, of Mumford Cove, died Wednesday (June 19, 2013). He was born in Hartford on May 13, 1922, the son of Thomas L. and Rose (Mulvey) Condron. On November 14, 1959, John married Marguerite (Peggy) Hutchinson, who always refers to him as "the love of her life". The couple soon moved to East Granby and later settled in Mumford Cove where they raised their family. John graduated from Buckley High School in Hartford where he was a key player on the football team. He enlisted with the US Navy during WWII serving as a gunners mate aboard the USS Towhee. Following his discharge from the Navy, John attended the Porter School of Design then embarked on a career as a machine designer until his retirement. In addition to his interest in football, John enjoyed softball and was an accomplished golfer. He achieved a hole in one at the Myrtle West Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, SC in March of 1991. In later years, John's greatest joy was his family and time spent at home with Peggy. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren added much to the happiness of frequent family gatherings. Besides his wife, John is survived by his daughter, Laurene Sullivan (Timothy); grandchildren, Susan Sullivan, Colleen Sullivan Strapazzon, Justine Condron and John J. Condron III; three great-granddaughters; and a sister, Carol C. Kelliher. He was predeceased by a son, John J. Condron, Jr.; sisters, Rose C. Felleter and Jean C. Kinnane and brothers, Thomas L. Condron, Jr. and Francis J. Condron.
His family will receive friends Sunday, June 30 from 12:30-1 p.m. immediately followed by a service at 1 p.m. at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic (51 Williams Ave.). Funeral celebrant Patricia A. Moody will officiate. Full military honors will follow at the funeral home directly after the service. Burial will be private.
