John Crosskey Obituary

On Monday, October 16, John Crosskey, of Englewood, FL, a beloved husband and father, passed away. He was ninety-three. Born in Bronxville, NY on May 30, 1930, to parents William Winslow Crosskey and Celia Moryks Crosskey, John grew up in Chicago, IL and graduated from the Taft School in Watertown, CT. His college years at Yale University in New Haven, CT, were interrupted by the Korean War, in which he served in the US Air Force. After discharge, John returned to Yale and graduated with a degree in Russian Literature, followed by a law degree from the University of Virginia Law School. Upon graduating, he joined the law firm of Day, Berry and Howard in Hartford, CT where he ultimately became a partner, spending 1960-1994 with the firm. He retired from DBH and continued in the profession as an arbitrator and mediator for the American Arbitration Association and Alternate Dispute Resolution in CT until 2020.

John loved to sail, enjoying his free time with his family racing his sailboat in Long Island Sound and cruising to Block Island, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard. He also loved to travel! Throughout his later years, he and wife Linda travelled, seeing much of the world, with favorite destinations being China, Italy, Indonesia, and Africa, despite being chased by a charging rhino.

John is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda Calhoun Crosskey; his children, William W. Crosskey II, James Crosskey, Sarah Marvin, and Marnie Crosskey; stepsons Graham Calhoun and Sean Calhoun: nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces Celia O'Brien and Helen Byler. John is also survived by his former wife Maude Thompson, mother of his children. He is predeceased by his younger sister Ann Crosskey Byler.

There will be a Celebration of Life for family and friends on a date to be announced. If you choose to donate in John's name, please give to the Suncoast Humane Society, Englewood, Florida.

I worked with John as an associate and partner at DBH trying a number of construction cases with him. He was always affable and congenial. He was an excellent partner. After retiring it was no surprise that he would have a successful career as an arbitrator and mediator. He had the right personality for bringing parties together. Ernie Mattei
