John Downey Obituary

John L. Downey, 74, of North Canton, passed away December 15, 2021 at his home. Born in Hartford, son of the late Emil and Pauline (Gayda) Downey, he had lived in North Canton most of his life where he had been a builder for many years. He was co-owner of D&M Motors, owner of an excavation company, Aetna Construction, and owner of JLD Builders. He enjoyed Off Road Jeep Racing and competed in many races. He won several prestigious races, one of the most memorable was winning the Baja 1000 with his father. He was also a competitive pistol shooter. He loved spending time with his Dutch Shepherd, Buddy, who was his devoted best friend. He leaves his son Timothy and his wife Julia of Barkhamsted; two daughters Laura Moore and husband Jay of Winsted, and Michelle Downey of New Haven; also son John Downey, Jr. of Torrington, and daughter Tracy Downey-Freireich of OH; grandchildren Matilda Downey, Meadow and Orion Moore, and Taylor Sweeney; four siblings Robert Downey of North Canton, Carl Downey of Barkhamsted, Emil Downey of North Canton, and Robin Downey-Murphy of Canton. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Michael Downey. His family will celebrate his life with a visitation on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, from 5-7 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. Private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Collinsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice that supports animals.
