John McCarrick Obituary

McCARRICK, John J. John J. McCarrick, 81, of Mansfield, beloved husband of Margaret (Boyd) McCarrick died Sunday (March 16, 2008), after a lengthy courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. John spent his boyhood years in Willimantic. After attending St. John's Military Academy in Washington, D.C., he entered the United States Merchant Marines in 1944 as a radio officer where he remained for 10 years. Mr. McCarrick retired from the Customer Service Department of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1987. During that period, he and his family lived in Bolton. He was very proud of the work he did restoring an old farmhouse in Bolton making it the home where he and his family lived for many years. He served as chairman of the Bolton Board of Education during the planning and building of Bolton High School. He also served as president of the Manchester Child Guidance Clinic. After moving to the Storrs/Mansfield area in 1987, he became active on the Board of Directors at the Windham Textile and History Museum serving a term as president of the board. He was also an active volunteer with the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History. Beside his wife, Margaret, his son, John, of Andover survives him. Another son, Peter, predeceased him. He leaves two sisters, Lorraine Gorton of Burlington, WA and Agnes Leib of West Hartford. He also leaves a sister-in-law and brother-in-law,.Janet and Bob Azinger of Louisville, KY and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the Haven Health Center of Windham staff that has so compassionately cared for him during his final days. Complying with his wishes, there will be a private burial in Bolton Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society Greater Connecticut Chapter, 659 Tower Ave. First Floor, Hartford, CT 06112-1269.
