John Solan Obituary

Jack Solan, of Naples, FL, passed away on March 21, 2023, of a sudden heart attack, proving once and for all to his children that he had a heart. Jack was born on September 9, 1939 to the late John and Kathleen (Curtin) Solan in Lynn, MA. He attended St. Mary's High School in Lynn and graduated from Boston College in 1960, followed by three years of Army service in the Comptroller's Office in Heidelberg, Germany. Upon his return to Boston, he began his 34-year career with Ernst & Young. He served as Managing Partner in Manchester, NH; New Haven, CT; Stamford, CT; and finally Hartford, CT. He acted as National Partner in Charge of Recruiting and retired as Partner in Charge of Best Practices in 1998. Deciding seven days of golf was too taxing, he joined the Phoenix Companies as VP of Strategic Development and served on the Boards of Aberdeen Asset Management and Lombard International.

Throughout his life, Jack demonstrated his community support and civic duty by serving on numerous boards, including Board President of United Way in Manchester; the boards of United Way of Greater New Haven, Shubert Theatre of New Haven, New Haven Chamber of Commerce, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce.

After several years snow-birding from Hartford to Naples, FL, Jack made Naples his permanent home in 2017. Jack loved golf, a notorious leftie, most recently frequenting the 19th Hole at the Hartford Country Club and the Country Club of Naples. Off the course, you could find him attending Artis Naples, dining at one of his haunts, cheating at crossword puzzles, rooting for the Red Sox, and flirting with all the ladies. Jack was a natural storyteller, loved making others laugh, and cared deeply for his friends and family. He was very grateful for his family and for the lifelong friendships he built over the years. He specifically instructed his kids to "thank his friends for being such good friends."

Jack was predeceased by his former wife Bonnie (Tubridy), former wife Connie (Oliver), sister Carol (Nyberg), and brother Richard. He is survived by his handsome, intelligent, successful son Mark, New York; his undisputed favorite child Tracy (David Phillips), Ohio; sisters Patricia Crowe, Tennessee; Kathleen Burt, New Hampshire; and Noreen (Jonathan) Lazar, Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews. His grandchildren are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.

The family would like to thank the doctors and health care professionals that enabled him to live these last years doing what he loved with the people he loved.

A celebration of life will be held April 29th in Naples, FL. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to the American Diabetes Association, or to the charity of your choice.

Sorry to hear about Jack's passing. A wonderful and funny guy on the golf course that will be missed. A quick wit. Always enjoyable to play with and against at HGC. Best Wishes.

Ahhhhh the life of Jack Solan! We loved his quick witted humor and comfort! He had a way of expressing himself with humor and storytelling! He loved family (we were blessed by him in our lives) and friends. He called during my mom´s death journey to truly express his care and concern. Yes, Jack had a heart!! Thanks for the laughter Mark- we enjoyed reading every word of this obituary! Many thoughts and prayers for you Mark and Tracy- we don´t know what happens at the time of death, but I´m sure he made a joke and made them smile! Love love love

Jack and I worked and played together for many years. Jack frequently asked for my advice and then did what he wanted anyway. I will always remember Jack's request for Kettle One when ordering his afternoon cocktail at The Hartford Golf Club.

I am saddened to learn of Jack's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him at EY in Hartford and we remained friends after his retirement. He had a strong presence, great sense of humor and was always a gentleman. My condolences to his family.
