Kathleen Pompa Obituary

Kathleen Morgan Pompa, of Wethersfield, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was 64 years old. In her last months and days she demonstrated tremendous inner strength, and left this earth with a great serenity and dignity that was inspiring to her family. Kathy was the beloved daughter of Grace Smith Morgan Dillon and the late Dr. David Russell Morgan. She was an unusually kind and generous soul, was deeply loved by her family and friends, and will be greatly missed. She was a wonderful mother to her two daughters, Jaclyn and Leeann, and an extremely devoted and involved grandmother to her three grandchildren, Nicholas Jr., Dean and Shannon, for whom her love was boundless. Kathy was born on June 16, 1953. Her exceptional kindness and compassion was in evidence even as a child, as she was selected by her teachers in sixth grade at Chapman School in Cheshire, Connecticut to receive the highest honor awarded to sixth grade students there, the Fannie Camp Gulnac Citizenship Award. She was an excellent student, becoming a National Merit Scholarship Finalist in high school, and went on to earn a degree in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut, and a Certificate in computer programming from the Computer Processing Institute. She married Marc Pompa in 1977, and the couple had two children, Jaclyn and Leeann. Kathy had a long and successful career as a computer systems analyst and data architect with the Aetna Insurance Company and the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, retiring in January 2017. She was also very active in supporting a number of charitable organizations, including Amnesty International, Save the Children, and Friends of the Wethersfield Library. Kathy is survived by her two daughters, Jaclyn Pompa Morrison and her husband Nicholas Morrison of Wethersfield, and Leeann Pompa of Middletown, her mother, Grace Smith Morgan Dillon and her husband Bernard Dillon, of Cheshire, her three grandchildren Nicholas Morrison Jr., Dean Morrison and Shannon Morrison, all of Wethersfield, her sisters Joanne Morgan Bedard and her husband Richard Bedard of Ellington, and Susan Morgan Mauro and her husband Michael Mauro of Southington, her brothers David Russell Morgan Jr., of Windermere, Florida, and Thomas Michael Morgan and his wife Amy Morgan of Las Vegas, Nevada, and many nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives may call on the family at Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a memorial service commencing at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kathy's memory to The Friends of the Wethersfield Library, Inc., c/o The Wethersfield Library, 515 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, CT 06109. To Kathy's children,
It has been a very long time since I was in contact with your mother. But I am writing to tell you (as you most likely already know) she was one of the most kind, empathetic, giving persons I have ever known. We were friends at UCONN, but lost touch after graduation. It was indeed a blessing to have known her during that time. I am offering my sincere condolences to you and am sorry that it has taken so long to do this. I have no doubt that you have inherited and will carry on her generous spirit and love of life.
Very sincerely,
Janet (Harvey) Correll

With her quiet, unassuming presence Kathy was a person to admire.

As her aunt, I remember feeling the excitement of her birth. She was the first in a new generation for our family. Born in Chicago and living her first couple of years in Bangor, Maine, she then became faithful to Connecticut - all the way.

I will truly miss her. Being generous to a fault, Kathy always went way out of her way for others. She had a way of making you feel like you meant something to her. Last year when I was in Wethersfield for a visit (I live in Minnesota) she treated me royally for my 75th birthday. I cherish that memory along with all the other connections we had.

Her love and caring for her family and her very positive outlook on life kept her going through a very tough illness. Being under no illusion, she still managed to keep her beautiful optimistic attitude. I deeply feel the loss of her presence in this world.

Everything in life, in the world, captured Kathy's interest. She was a Renaissance person living in the modern world. A child of the 60's, she lived her life embracing the idealism that sprang from that era. She was a lover of math and of music. Of science fiction and romance novels. Of computers and the theater. Of the New York Giants and Stephen Hawking. Both a Girl Scout leader and an H&R tax accountant (just because it'd be fun). Of travel, and learning, and experiencing life.

This was the Kathy whom we saw on the outside. On the inside, was a deep spiritual base. She early in life identified with the culture of the North American Indians. Their belief was that everything in the world was sacred, each rock, each plant, every living creature. That everything here in this physical world was to be respected. And that's how Kathy viewed the world and lived her life as well as she could in accord with those ideals.

But there was a part of her inner being, a trait, which took years of reflection by me before it finally resonated with me as being real, and pure, and true. She believed in people. She believed that each of us had the potential to do great things, be good people, and make the world a better place.

And each of us whom had the good fortune of knowing Kathy experienced her belief in us. When others didn't. When we didn't. She did.

I'll miss your smile, and your laugh, and will never be able to thank you enough for being Leeann and Jackie's mom.

My condolences to Kathy's family. While I didn't get a chance to work with Karthy much at HSB, she always had a friendly hello for you.
