Laurie Soleau Obituary

SOLEAU, Laurie Yingling Laurie Yingling Soleau, 65, of South Glastonbury, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, (February 25, 2009) in Hartford, from surgical complications. She was born September 15, 1943, in Washington D.C., the daughter of Roswell and Lorna Yingling. Laurie grew up in Old Town Alexandria, VA, with her parents and two younger brothers, Martin and John. She was married in 1965, divorced in 1983, and will be remembered as the loving mother of Christopher and Stephanie Soleau. Laurie is a proud graduate of George Washington High School, William & Mary College and has a Master's degree from Smith College School of Social Work. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi and PEO. Her passion to guide and help others, especially children, lead her through several years of school teaching and social work. She was a devoted student, educator, traveler and adventurer with a love of history and the outdoors. Whether it was camping, canoeing, white water rafting, hiking, caving , theatre, site seeing or a thorough tour of a museum, Laurie was always ready for an educational adventure. Her love of nature and family stemmed from her deep connection to Native American culture. She had a great appreciation for Native American artifacts and antiques. Spending time with her children, grandchildren, family, and her rescued cats were some of her passions. Laurie was especially proud of her long family history which she researched back to the 1700's. Laurie was preceded in death by her parents, Roswell and Lorna Yingling. She is survived by her son, Christopher Soleau, Lebanon; daughter, Stephanie Soleau, Dexter, ME; grandchildren, Savannah, Averie, Addison, Brayden; her two brothers, Martin Yingling, Phoenix, and Major General John Yingling, Atlanta. Calling hours will be from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, March 1, and services will follow at the Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT 06033. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made "in Memory of Laurie Soleau" to CT Program for Continuing Education, Bev Shaw, 83A Grouse Hill Rd., Glastonbury, CT 06033. Laurie will be laid to rest next to her parents in the Old Presbyterian Meeting House Cemetery, Alexandria, VA.

To the Yingling/Soleau Family: It was a great honor and privilege to have known Laurie and cared for her in the winter of her life. Her gift to counsel and guide will forever be etched in my heart, as she brought this to me every day. We tended to her secret garden often, and shared many special thoughts as we worked together. Lauries love of nature was so evident in all that she created. Laurie opened her heart and home to numerous strayed and abandoned animals for many years as she cared deeply for the misfortune of countless cats and dogs along the way. She was giving and gracious always. I miss her so....may God's love be with her, and all of her family and friends as we seek comfort in one another. Through Laurie I met the most special and extraordinary people, which I know was a reflection of her very soul. So long my dear, sweet Laurie Ann; until we meet again, fear not; farewell my friend. In our hearts you will always be.....Love, Diane, Spencer and Abigail: your beloved pets.

I will miss my big sister very much....although 9 years older, we had a very close relationship. She was very proud of her little brother and his military service to our nation. She would visit us often wherever the Army would send us. She was a unique person, caring and interested in all things. I will miss her. God bless her and her family.

I only met Laurie once. We shared the happiest of family holidays together - Christmas. She had come down to Georgia to visit her brother and his family. As we military folk often do, we were combining efforts and celebrating together. It was a treat, after all of these years of hearing about Laurie, to finally meet her and host her in my home. She immediately fit in and I hope, had a wonderful time. I know she added to our enjoyment of the holiday that year. May God bless you Laurie, and rest in peace.

I am the mother of Ann Yingling. Laurie and I went to Korea together to visit Ann and Jay in 2000, and we had such a great time. I am so sorry to hear of your mother's death.
And we both spent Christmas with Ann and Jay in Atlanta in 2007.

My maiden name was Laurie Kennon Stout and now I am Kennon Ibbeken. I am Pete and Micki Stout's daughter and my given name was after Laurie Soleau. It has been years since I have seen Laurie, but I have the fondest of memories of the times that she would visit or we would go on vacation. She added different level of excitement to our day to day schedule when she would visit. She was a prankster, playful, fun and we never had to go to bed on time when she was staying over. I was deeply saddened to hear that she had passed on and wish the best for Stephanie and Christopher as they carry on her legacy.

ALl the best,
Kennon Ibbeken

In tears we saw you sinking
And watched you fade away.
Our hearts were broken,
We wanted you to stay.
But when we saw you sleeping,
So peacful and free from pain.
How could we wish you back with us
To suffer again.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
The day God Called you home.

Mom - I love you and find great comfort with your presence around me. I will miss seeing and hearing you, but love and cherish the spiritual connection we have. I'm glad to have you with me, always.

Laurie and I were great friends growing up in Alexandria, Virginia, and even though I have lived in CA for 40 years, she and I have remained close, and have had many wonderful trips together over the past 10-15 years. Her love of family and friends gave her much joy.
Laurie, may you rest in peace and comfort. Love, Mary Lee

Dear Stephanie It is with deep sadness that I read of the loss of your dear Mother. She was my next door neighbor for many years; we shared some fun moments and a few lovely lunches and definitely more than a few laughs. I loved her adventurous spirit and I must say I believe she lived life to its' fullest! My sympathies go to you, Chris, and your beautiful families at this sad time. I will always remember Laurie just by looking at her garden which she tended to so lovingly.

Laurie and I became friends our first day at William & Mary. She lived just across the hall and was such a delight. I'll never forget trying to sleep the night before our first semester exams and hearing Laurie exclaim from across the hall, "My God, I've forgotten the Lord's prayer!"

When I think of Laurie, I immediately remember that beautiful smile that could light up a room. Whether she was cheering with face paint and "Indian garb" at a Saturday football game, studying late for an exam, or decorating the sorority house for a rush party, she always had time to stop, look you in the eye, smile, and listen. Beautiful college coeds are sometimes too self-absorbed to take time for others; not Laurie. This concern for others carried on in her adult life. Her love for her family and friends never faultered; no doubt the impact of that love survives. Susan Landis, college friend and sorority sister.

It takes but a moment to be thrown back in time and memory and connect with those we hold dear. Laurie and I were sorority sisters and we shared a dorm suite our junior year. Laurie was someone you were always happy to be with. She was kind, she was fun, she was humble and she was full of laughter- she seemed like the All American girl. To read about her interests is to be not at all surprised. Farewell Laurie -smooth seas and following winds.

To me, Laurie was Miss William and Mary - I felt she was the most beautiful person, inside and out. To be honest, I absolutely adored her. She will be greatly missed.

Dear Laurie, I will remember our quiet evening visits, interesting conversations and some good laughs as well. I will think of you whenever I see a beautiful rose like the ones you always brought to me for John.
You are in my prayers.
