Lawrence Hutnick Obituary

HUTNICK, Lawrence S. Lawrence S. Hutnick, 77, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Marie Hutnick, passed away on Wednesday (January 31, 2007). He was born in Hartford. He was a retired teacher and guidance counselor in the Wethersfield School system. After retirement he continued to find joy in teaching tennis. His athletic accomplishments were many and in a number of different sports. This included playing professional baseball, many tennis rankings in New England for doubles, and his latest passion, the game of golf, which he enjoyed most with his daughter Felicia. In 2002 he was inducted into the Hartford Public High School Athletic Hall of Fame. A veteran of the Air Force and a Trinity College graduate, he returned to his alma mater to coach tennis for two seasons. During retirement Larry started baking pizza and pies. Many of his friends came to enjoy his famous pizza and apple pies, which he often personally delivered. Larry touched an incredible number of lives; from the children he was a mentor to, to the many students who called him "Coach." He loved his family and the people he called friend. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Lori; a son, Steven Hutnick; a daughter and son-in-law, Felicia Hutnick and John Kaiser; his sister, Pauline Hurlbut and his brother, Steve Hutnik. He loved his grandchildren and will be missed by Sarah and Lauren Hutnick, and Alexis, Stephanie and Teresa Kaiser. Memorial donations may be made to: HPHS Sports Hall of Fame, c/o Hartford Public School, 55 Forest St. Hartford, CT 06105, Attn: Elizabeth Gunn. Calling hours are on Sunday, February 4 from 2-5 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St. in Wethersfield on Monday February 5 at 10 a.m. The burial will be private. Dear Marie: Frank and I were so sorry to hear that Coach had passed away. As you know, I was very fond of him, and especially enjoyed our recent banter at the Club on those special occasions. He was a wonderful teacher, and if it hadn't been for him, I never would have mastered that math class!! I'll miss him greatly. I'm so sorry for your suffering and loss. It is a loss for all of us. My dear Marie,

I was deeply saddened to learn of your loss. I didn't know Larry well, but I do know what an inspiration he was to all who knew him, and what a blessing he was to you and yours.

Years have passed, but the memories are still vivid of the great times you, Corrine, I, and all had at Oakwood. I still remember Felicia being my first dinner guest when I moved to Florida 23 years ago.

Please know, Marie, my heart is with you and your family during this trying time. I know you will be strong because you are. My very best.

Dear Hutnick Family,
I'm so sorry for your loss. I had Larry for math in the late fifties. I was never much of a math student, but he did his best for me. Thanks to him, I'm still able to help kids at my middle school who are just venturing into algebra. He was passionate about his teaching and I consider myself fortunate to have gained from his knowledge and patience. With deepest sympathy,

Larry, Lori and family
It is with great sadness that we learn of your dad's passing. Certainly he will be missed by his immediate family and those that knew him as a teacher, counselor and wonderful man.
While we also enjoyed the pie contest (altough we still think it was fixed :) )the memory I have for some reason is that of our trip to your cottage. Not only for the great time we had with you and Larry and Marie but for that boat trip. I remember returning from it and found your dad hard at work trimming the bushes around the front yard. I thought that was kind of odd but did not give it too much thought until later. I realized that one of his favorite things was helping other people. He had done that his whole life and this was just another example. I am sure you know that better than us.
Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Hutnick's,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Larry was such a wonderful guy. My kids, Alexa and Haley, took outdoor Tennis lessons with Larry in Glastonbury. In fact, they took their last lesson with with him this past December 29 - he said it was the latest into the winter he had ever taught an outdoor lesson. They really enjoyed learning the game from him. It was the only lessons they enjoyed attending. He will be missed.

41 years ago I watched the first Super Bowl Game...At our familiy's dear friends house, the Hutnicks. I was so excited,I never forgot it. Not so much about the game but the fact that the Hutnicks the first people we knew that had a color television set! Your family has been dear friends for so long. Your Dad has such wonderful qualities, fun loving, generous, competitive, and quietly confident,a class act! He was my guidance conselor at WHS as well. I think he taught everyone in my family how to play the great game of tennis. I will always remember him fondly.

Dear Mrs. Hutnick, Steven, Larry, Felicia and families,
I am so terribly sorry for your loss, our love and hearts are with you now and always.
I am also eternally grateful to have known such a fine and lovely man. He was many things to me: Neighbor. Father of my first crush. Father of my first baseball instructor (Felicia taught us baseball - everything her Dad taught her - for 5 cents a lesson, what a deal). He was the man who introduced my children to tennis when we returned from London, and they remember his lovely words of support in every stroke they take today. He was the man at our door, with an apple pie in his hand and a soft knowing smile, when my Mom passed so quickly.
Mr. Hutnick will always be part of our hearts and souls, for all his many wondrous ways of sharing his love.

I wish to send my condolences to the many members of Larry Hutnik's family. I knew him well through tennis, especially on the Pine Acres courts. I will always remember how, through one example during one doubles match, he showed me how to "use my head" while playing tennis.

George Galinsky

February 2, 2007

To the Hutnick family... Hi, this is George Galinsky, not only did I take tennis lessons from Larry, but he was also my guidance counselor at WHS. I have very fond memories of both experiences because of his sharp wit and caring nature. My daughter Jenna and my wife Nicholina have also both met Larry as Jenna took tennis lessons from him too - last year. Jenna always came home saying how much she loves "Larry", and she called him her third grandfather. Since we moved to North Stonington, she's been endlessly complaining that no tennis instructor could ever match up, and she's not the type to complain. Jenna got a kick out of the way he joked with her and treated her like an adult. She is only 13. We think the value of their relationship went way beyond "tennis" thanks to Larry. Our sincerest thoughts are with you all at this time. The Galinsky Family.

Mr. Hutnick, Coach, was always an upbeat positive influence for me as young person growing up. My memories as a child were of this big happy man, always moving with strength and determination. It was a great example to have growing up. There was always a sense of pride within Mr. Hutnick and it was contagious, making me proud to be around him and proud of my own accomplishments. His influence is still strong years and years later.

Growing up at Pine Acres Swim and Tennis club there were certain “celebrity” families that people just loved to be around. The Hutnicks were one of everyone’s favorites because of they all always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. I remember Larry Hutnick teaching tennis and also being part of fun, good times, and happy memories many including myself had summers in the 60’s and 70’s.
