Leslie Kerr Obituary

Leslie Norman Kerr, 78, of Bloomfield, beloved husband for 49 years to the late Rose Zell (Brooks) Kerr, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital. He was born in Vauxhall in the Parish of St. Ann, Jamaica on April 22, 1939, son of the late George and Icilda (Emanuel) Kerr, he was raised in Jamaica and immigrated to the United States and settled in Connecticut 61 years ago. Leslie started working as an electrician in Jamaica and after moving to East Hartford, he continued to pursue his trade as an electrical contractor. He owned and operated his own business, Kerr Electric, Inc. for over 40 years retiring in 2016 after his wife's passing. He was a member of the Electrical Local Union #35 and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). He and his wife who worked with him looked forward to attending the NECA Conventions every year and learning about the new advances that were occurring in his industry. Leslie loved to keep up on current events and faithfully watched MSNBC and CNN everyday to keep abreast of the news stories that were developing. He was very proud of his West Indian heritage and was a lifetime member of the West Indian Social Club of Hartford. He enjoyed relaxing at the club, reminiscing about his childhood in Jamaica, and playing dominoes with his friends. He was also a member of Faith Congregational Church on Main Street in Hartford. In his spare time, he loved working in his yard and tending to the vegetable and flower gardens around his home. His property was always immaculate and he cared for his plants himself up until his recent illness. Leslie also loved to cook and eat and was well-known by his family and close friends for his First Sunday dinners which always included his famous chicken recipe with rice and peas. Most of all, Leslie will be remembered as a family man who loved and cared for his wife and daughter throughout his life. He was always well dressed and loved to shop for new suits, ties, and other clothing. Leslie had a kind and outgoing personality endearing him to everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He leaves his one and only beloved daughter, LaSheri Jonee' Kerr of Windsor Locks; his only living sibling, a sister, Ruthlin Earle of Miramar, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his loving wife Rose, he was predeceased by three brothers, Roy Sydney Kerr, Lloyd Kerr, and Charles Haynes; and two sisters, Enid Haynes Thomas and Ruth Hubert. His family will receive friends and well wishers on Saturday, September 16, at 9 a.m. for the viewing, followed by a Homegoing Service at 10 a.m., at the Faith Congregational Church, 2030 Main St., Hartford. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Leslie's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Faith Congregational Church, 2030 Main St., Hartford, CT 06120. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. For online condolences please visit, www.carmonfuneralhome.com.
