Lois Caffrey Obituary

CAFFREY, Lois A. Lois A. Caffrey, 77, of Meriden, passed away Thursday, (December 25, 2008), at the MidState Medical Center in Meriden. Born in Meriden, July 17, 1931, a daughter of the late George H. and Mary Scanlon Caffrey, she had been a Meriden resident for many years. Lois graduated in 1949 from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in West Harford and in 1952 from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Bridgeport. Following graduation, she and four of her classmates relocated to New York City to work at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, in the Babies Hospital section for five years. She loved living in New York City and especially enjoyed the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, concerts and plays. She then returned to Meriden and was employed at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home & Hospital for 23 years until her retirement in the early 80's. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church in Meriden. Lois is survived by her sister, Joan Caffrey Stevens of Plantsville; her brothers, Carroll A. Caffrey and his wife, Jean of Durham, retired Meriden Police Chief, George J. Caffrey and his wife, Josephine of Meriden and Dr. Robert J. Caffrey and his wife, MaryLou of Manchester and several nieces and nephews, whom she doted on, Peter and Carol Stevens, Jill Stevens, Tony and Hildy Caffrey, Kimberly Jean Jandreau, Rob and Karen Caffrey, Jessica and Glen, John and Tracey, Kevin and Tracey, Tom, Mary Kate, Beth and Peggy Caffrey, and several grand nieces and grand nephews. She was predeceased by her nephews, Timothy Caffrey and George Stevens. Christmas was her favorite time of the year. Lois would travel to Boston, Durham, Portland and Meriden in all kinds of weather to distribute gifts to her nieces and nephews. It gave her so much joy to see their faces when they opened their gifts. Lois was a very kind and loving person. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rose of Lima Church, 35 Center St., Meriden, Tuesday, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meriden. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to the charity of one's choice. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street, Ext., Wallingford. www.wallingfordfh.com

December 28, 2008

Our sincere condolences go out to the family of Lois Caffrey, a sister to our friends, George and Josephine Caffrey. Though I was younger and didn't know Lois personally, I did deliver the family's newspaper in my youth. My elder sister was a school friend of Lois. I later worked with and for George at Meriden PD and we have managed to continue our friendship.

Words cannot heal the pain which loved ones must endure at times as these. Our prayers go forth for the repose of Lois' soul, and may her loved ones be comforted in the Lord's promise of eternal life for all the faithful. May she find eternal rest.
