A mi querido esposo Luis Enrique

My heart is saddened. I just found out about your departure Luis. I am sorry for not being current on what is going on around me. I can not believe it! Some time not to long ago you came to get one of my cakes you loved so much, and as always you smiled as you paid more than what I asked for it.
Ingrid, I am deeply sorry for your loss. I would have never think of this to happen. There is no word in my mind to express how sorry and sad I am for your loss. Please, forgive me for being so disconnected from those who once helped me like you both did. rest in peace "Don Luis".

My cousin Louie was the coolest cousin I had. The summers I spent in CT, especially the family road trip to Niagara Falls, staying up all night talking and laughing, are some of my best childhood memories. He always took care of me like an older brother and I'll miss him dearly. I'll always cherish the times we spent in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. My thoughts and prayers are with Ingrid & Louie, Jr. and all of the family. Wish we could all be together during this sad time.

We will remember Mr. Montalvo in schoolwide prayer this week, and will keep Arianna and the entire family close to our hearts in the days and weeks to come. We are very, very sorry for your loss.

From Luis to my Children
By Oona Montalvo

Don't worry for you will never forget me

The warmth of my hand is in your hand

The kiss of my lips on your cheek

The rumbling rolling of my laugh

My golden smile

Just look at each other's faces and you will see me

Come together and I will celebrate with you

My smile is behind your smile

My laugh echoes behind yours

Your love is stronger because my love is behind it

Peer closely in the mirror and you will see the twinkle

of my eyes snapping back at you

From Luis to my Wife
By Oona Montalvo

Don't worry, Ing…

Because my love is not far away

But beside you

Surrounding you

The warm summer breeze, my hug

The sun's rays, my smiling down on you

Dance out in the rain storms Ing…

For each raindrop is my kiss upon your cheek

The thunder my laughter

And the lightning …

The lighting is the fire between us for all to witness

My heart is very sadden by the passing of Luis. My whole heart goes out to his family. My daughters Brooke and Carly used to play on the basketball teams together. When you are basketball parents there is a very special bond that you share. A deep bond of laughter and tears. You are... seated at the Right Hand of The Father. May perpetual light shine upon your soul. May Jesus hold your family in his hands and never let go. God be with you; All my love, Deb DiBella Wilcox

Ileana, what a wonderful Eulogy you gave your brother. I was unable to attend the funeral, but I saw Louie, Ingrid and the girls at the wake.Very sad to hear of Louie's untimely death. I too will never forget that infectious smile of his. Do you have any idea how many times in his life that wonderful smile of his got him out of trouble? I can't count that high, but I'm glad to say that I witnessed it on many occasions. I hope all is well with you in NYC.

Eulogy for Luis Enrique Montalvo
given at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, April 13, 2012

by his sister Ileana Montalvo

On behalf of our family, I would like to thank you for your support at this time of our great sorrow and loss. The outpouring of love from friends, family, and co-workers has been a source of great comfort.

Luis Enrique Montalvo Fonteciella was a giant of a man. He was a giant because of the size of his heart. He was a giant because of the strength of his character and his boundless empathy and generosity. But most of all, I describe him as a giant because when he walked into a room; he filled it with a sunny energy. He filled it with his smile. And so it will always be at the moments when we remember him.

My brother had the widest smile. When he smiled, it spread all over his face and sparkled. His eyes would squint shut because of the width of his smile. I will miss your smile, my brother, but your smile was so wide and shining that it is as clear in my mind's eye as if you were right here. And it will be with me, with all of us, forever.

One of my favorite memories happened at the Christmas before his daughter Ingrid was born. After the Christmas Eve dinner, my brother, my sister-in-law Ingrid and I grabbed a couple of plastic sleds and headed to Hillside Park. There was a full moon and the snow covering the hills looked blue. We rode the hill down, sometimes two, sometimes the three of us on a sled so that we could go faster. I remember Ingrid squealing with laughter on the way down and my brother's wide smile on his face wet with snow as he came trudging back up the sledding hill.
We stayed there a long time that night. It was magical, the three of us playing in the blue snow like children. My brother and Ingrid were like one person. I felt privileged to be a witness.

Luis loved his children deeply and his family was his greatest joy. Luis Jose, the first-born, looks so much like him. I first laid eyes on him as he was cradled in my brother's arms. He was a golden baby and Louie was smiling his golden smile.

He loved babies and loved caring for them as Ingrid describes, “like a mother”. With the birth of his first daughter Ingrid Mireya, the nurses in the maternity ward chose him to demonstrate to the new mothers how to bathe a newborn.

When his youngest daughter Xiomara was born, he said to Ingrid “I'm sorry Ing, another one that looks like me, they don't look like you.” And all three of them have extraordinary smiles like their father.

Luis loved his job for the Hartford Public Library's bookmobile program and he was beloved by the readers on his route. Ingrid laughs when she tells stories of how no matter where they were, whether it was the Stop and Shop or the CVS, people would approach Louie to say hello. “Who was that?” she would ask – it was always readers from the bookmobile. Sometimes it was readers who were children when he brought them books and were now grown up. They all remembered him. It was like walking around with Brad Pitt. Everybody loved Louie.

My brother died an untimely death and this has shaken our family as untimely deaths always do. In the hospital he kept saying that he was going to make some moves. Make some moves for him. Make him smile.
