Margaret Poehnert Obituary
Margaret Mary (Purtell) Poehnert, 94, formerly of West Hartford, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. She was the daughter of former US Senator William A Purtell who served the State of Connecticut from 1952-1958, and Katherine (Cassidy) Purtell, a WWI army nurse. Margaret (Peg) grew up in West Hartford and attended Mount St. Joseph Academy, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College. In her younger years she traveled the world and embraced all of its cultures. She was a lifelong Red Sox fan and devout Patriot's supporter since the team's founding. Margaret was also an avid reader and a lover of any crossword puzzle. Aside from her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 43 years Charles E. Poehnert, Jr., and her brother William A. Purtell, Jr. Survivors include her daughter Katherine L. Poehnert of Ocean Grove, NJ and son-in law Dan Hoerig of Interlaken, NJ; her sons Charles E. Poehnert, III and his wife Anita of Rocky Hill, and Jeffrey W. Poehnert and his wife Marlyn of Thornton, NH; five grandchildren including Chris and Jeff Poehnert, Cody Hoerig, Angel and Gabriel Poehnert; and three great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Church of St. Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Because animals were such an important part of Margaret's life, in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the CT Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111. I was so sorry to hear about Mrs. Poehnert. Rocky and I visited her at Apple Rehab until Rocky's retirement in June of 2016. Her love for animals was evident as she always spent a lot of time telling me all about her dogs over the years.
