FEY, Mark Butler
Mark Butler Fey, childhood sweetheart and adored husband of Jill Hammerberg-Fey for nearly forty years, died at home encircled by us on February 4, 2012, after a long, yet resolute battle with prostate cancer. Mark loved and was loved back by his family, friends and the town of Farmington. He could talk to anyone and fix almost anything. He was caring, mischievous, and our hero. Born on April 5, 1952, the oldest son of Laurel B. Fey and the late Wilbur J. Fey, Mark was raised in Farmington since the age of seven where he attended the succession of public schools. Mark went on to earn first a BA in English and then an MS in Lipid Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut. After working in the field of toxicology, Mark studied architecture and joined the firm of Don Hammerberg, a family owned business, where he was fully engaged and challenged for the last 27 years. Mark's vision of Farmington was extraordinary. Public service for his beloved town included such commitments as the Land Trust, Board of Directors for Historical Society, Historic District Commission, Intern Program Mentor for high school students, Rails to Trails, Youth Baseball, FVGLA and the Council of Deacons for First Church, Congregational, and serving a term on the Town Council. Honoring tradition of caring for the community, Mark took great pleasure in yielding design contributions for many visible town sites. In addition to his wife, Jill, and mother, Laurel, Mark leaves behind the cherished legacy of his three sons, Nathan, Samuel and wife, Andrea, and Maxfield; his father-in-law, Don; siblings, Martin, Nancy, Erik and their spouses, Delia, Chip, and Kato; a sister-in-law, Peri Pogson, and her spouse, John; nephews and nieces, Drew and Hannah Yensan, Miles and Parker Fey, and Sarah and Ellen Pogson, and, of course, his loyal pups, Grace and Lucy. We would like to thank our extended family, neighbors, friends and McLean Home Care and Hospice for their generous and uplifting support.
Friends are invited to a celebration of our hero's life on Saturday, March 17 at 1 p.m. at the Meetinghouse, 75 Main Street, Farmington. In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Farmington Food Pantry, Amistad Hall, 75 Main Street, Farmington, CT 06032. Arrangements are being handled by The Ahern Funeral Homes, Inc., www.ahernfuneralhome.com.

Jill and family:
My mom called me and told me the sad news about Mark. It hit me hard. My childhood friend, Jill..you and I shared our Beatle dolls in 6th grade and sang "Lemon Tree" while rubbinig each others' arms!..remember that? :)
I just want to say I am so happy that you and Mark had the kind of marriage most of us dream of, with wonderful children to boot. I pray God will watch over you all and bring you comfort in the strength of knowing Mark is in good hands, and only a breath away.

I just got back from your service, Mark, and it was quite wonderful! I laughed and cried. I never had the privilege to meet your kids but after hearing them talk about you I can tell you and Jill have done a great job raising them. It was a pleasure sharing in a tiny part of your life. You will be missed but I'll catch ya again soon enough.

It's almost impossible to type while crying. It's also hard to sound compassionate, kind and supportive when your mind is spinning and your hands are shaking. But ultimately words cannot express my feelings. Someday, when I will be able to make some sense, organize my thoughts, and sound barely intellectual I will pick up the phone and call you. Until then I will hide behind this napkin on my desk.

Dear Jill and Family, I wanted to express my condolences to you. I went to visit Mark yesterday at work, when Hans told me the news. I am so saddened that such a beautiful man is not still here to spread his kindness. The world has so few like him. Must be why the rays of the sun are shining so bright now!

Hi Jill (and family),
Sorry to hear about Mark...may he rest in peace.
He was always fun to be around. I love seeing the videos of him and the kids singing in the backyard. I am still enjoying the major addition he designed for my house years ago.
We'll all miss him but I am sure he has left a huge hole in all of your hearts.

Jill and family,
I am so sad to hear that Mark is no longer with us. Mark was always my idol growing up and the memorable times spent with him and the Fey/Hammerberg families are forever etched in my mind. I'll always remember the Wells Drive “Halloween Parade” organized and led by Mark as he strolled up and down the street with 15 or so kids in full costume following his every move. I'll also remember the fateful yellow station wagon ride with Jill, Martin and me as passengers when Mark cut the corner a little tight and the imitation wood trim siding was completely ripped off the car. As scared as Mark was, he quickly gathered himself and coordinated probably the fastest car repair ever done so that his Dad would never know what happened that night. Many fond memories of Mark will always live inside of me.

My memories of Mark are happy ones. His morning swim with Jill, and sometimes the whole family, was one of my first memories. That and a great smile and keen funny bone. One of my favorite people, we will miss him

Jill, Nate, Sam, Max: The whole FHS swim family is saddened by your loss. I feel we have lost one of our own. Mark's legacy for me includes those crazy championship-meet pasta parties (all that hair!), the hospitality and warmness of your home, and the love and support he provided his sons over many years with the team. The memories are great and happy ones. Deepest condolences to all.

I remember the first time I met Mark. His family lived across the street from my best friend Sherry. He was sweet and kind and he was in love with Jill even then. We all attended FHS together and then our children attended together as well. A nicer family would be hard to find. To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.

I can't imagine a better legacy of an individual--Farmingham is better to have had him and his accomplishments are renowned. His family's fortitude and affection are a testament to his strength, character, and love. I can truly say that I am a better person solely by knowing Mark and his family. I am deeply saddened by his passing, but I find hope in the assurance that those who have loved him will endure.

Mark's dash (the line between his birth and passing) was full; of the talents given him, he used them wisely and fully. He loved and was loved. There is nothing more precious than to know what you have given has been received in joy. I offer in the spirit of love and empathic understanding, the hope needed to carry you through the pain in losing the such a precious part of your life. He will always be there for you, his love forever shall surround you; know his presence, feel his presence in all you feel, hear and experience. For this I know be true.
