Marnie Mueller Obituary

Marnie Wagstaff Mueller was born and raised in Abilene, Texas, and settled in Hartford, Ct where she spent over half a century raising her family, building a successful career and generously giving back to her community.

Marnie was born in Fort Worth, Tx in 1937 to Robert McAlpine and Texas Ormes Wagstaff. She attended Wellesley College (BA '59) and received her PhD in Economics from Yale University ('65).

As a professional, Marnie was truly a trailblazer for women. She began her career as an Economics professor first at Washington University followed by Wesleyan University. She then took her Economics acumen to business where she was one of the first women in Hartford to rise to the C-suite at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance. Following this she was one of the few female Board members of Boston Mutual Life, Life of Boston in New York and the Cigna Mutual Fund Board. She also enjoyed serving her community on many non-profit Boards, such as the Bishop's Investment Fund, the Colt Foundation Trustee, the Kazangian Economics Foundation, and ConnectiKids. Marnie was selected to participate in the American Leadership Forum, where she was involved in developing a program to support single mothers. She was also a proud member of the Wellesley Business Leadership Council.

Marnie was blessed with 61 years of marriage to Robert 'Bob' Ernest Mueller, whom she adored. She was predeceased by Bob and her brother John Morris Wagstaff of Abilene, Tx. Marnie was very proud of her three children, Sarah Mueller Gieringer, Paul Wagstaff Mueller and Emily Mueller De Celis, and her 8 grandchildren, all of whom survive her.

Marnie was a voracious reader, dog lover, avid walker, gardener and traveler, especially to Jamaica, the family's special home away from home where she earned the moniker 'Snorkel Plenty'. Friends and family will recall her brilliant, analytical mind, her traces of a Texas drawl, her calm strength, and caring, generous nature.

Marnie and Bob were devoted Episcopalians. A memorial service will be held at St John's Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave. in West Hartford for both Marnie and Bob on June 29th at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ConnectiKids, a youth development organization in the Hartford area. I too was a classmate of Marnie's. Through the years my husband and I stayed with them from time to time in Hartford. What gracious and generous people! So many memories to treasure.

Marnie was a college roommate and a dear friend for 69 years. Bob was by her side most of that time. I loved both of them and will miss them greatly.
