Mary McGann Obituary

Mary Kathleen Kelly McGann, the middle child of seven, born to Anthony and Catherine (Bishop) Kelly on December 23, 1931, at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, July 23 at Avery Heights in Hartford, surrounded by her cherished family.

She was baptized at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and received her early education at St. Patrick's and St. Mark's Schools in Peoria. She then attended the Academy of Our Lady High School and graduated in 1949. She enjoyed working at Catholic Social Services for several years after graduation. She started dating Jim McGann in 1954 after his time serving in Korea, and they were married in 1955. His work at Travelers Insurance Co. brought them to West Hartford in 1966, where they resided on the Boulevard until 2022.

Mary was a parishioner at St. Thomas the Apostle Church and, along with her husband, volunteered for many years as eucharistic minister to the homebound and those in local nursing facilities, including the residents at Brookview Healthcare Center. In 2012 Mary and Jim were recognized by the Archdiocese of Hartford with the St. Joseph Archdiocesan Medal of Appreciation for their work as CCD teachers and eucharistic ministers over the course of four decades.

Sisters Ellen Gorman and Pat Seiler and brothers Larry and Michael Kelly preceded Mary in death. In addition to her two younger sisters, Ann Hillig (Prescott Valley, AZ) and JoCele McEnany (Lee's Summit, MO), she leaves her loving husband and six children: Julie McDonald (Tom) of Brookfield; Jim (Lyn) of Silver Spring, MD; Joe (Rae) of West Hartford; Mary Ann Taylor (Dave) of Derry, NH; Kevin (Heather) of West Hartford; Mike (Christie) of East Hartford; and 15 grandchildren: Mollie Prizio (Paul, deceased), Ryan McDonald, Ali McDonald, Kate McGann (Jameel), Megan McGann, Grace McGann, Shaun McGann, Devin McGann, Kelly McGann, Ben Taylor, Sarah Taylor, Eliza Taylor, Patrick McGann, Bridget McGann, and Colin McGann. She also leaves one great-grandchild, Liam Prizio, and 45 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory can be made to the Intensive Education Academy (IEA), 840 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06117. Calling hours will be 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, July 26, at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday at 10 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 872 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. On behalf of the Joseph and Blanche Wincze family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Not only were my parents Mary and Jim's neighbors, but they became very close, wonderful friends. My siblings and I will always appreciate Mary's kindness and love for our family.
