Michael Goepfert Obituary

Michael James Goepfert, 61, of Vernon, CT passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, February 23. He was born on December 28 in Holyoke, MA. He is predeceased by his father, Marcel Goepfert. Mike grew up in Willington and Tolland, CT. He graduated from Tolland High School in 1977. A business graduate of Central Connecticut State University, he ran a successful manufacturing company which was founded by his father, Marcel. Michael was tremendously proud of his accomplishments throughout his years at Willington Nameplate Inc. in Stafford Springs, CT. He treated his employees like extended family. His personal touch on running his business caused him to be revered as not only an admirable CEO, but as a friend to all. Michael is survived by his beloved girlfriend, Mary Ahern; his mother, Sheila (Rainaud) Goepfert; his siblings, Stephen Goepfert and his wife Doreen, Lynn Dwyer and her husband, Jeffrey, Lisa Cretella and her husband Sal; his five sons, Michael and wife Brittany, Steven and his wife Ashley, Daniel and his wife Mary, Brian, and Joseph; and his four grandchildren, Quinn, Steven Jr., Iris, and Michael. He also leaves behind the mother of his five boys, Janet (Goepfert) O'Keefe. He took a great deal of pride in his five sons and they were the center of this life. He lived by his example, instilling a sense of purpose, pride, persistence and honor into all of his boys. He was a great father who made attending all of their games a top priority, coaching many of their teams. He cherished spending time with all of his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly as their "Papa". Though a tireless worker to provide for his children, he never sacrificed moments with his family for work. Weekly Wednesday dinners were a tradition he greatly cherished, where his parents, siblings, five sons, girlfriend and grandchildren would all congregate for food, drinks, and laughs. A regular ritual for over ten years, there were very few weeks missed due to special circumstances, most of which were rescheduled. Accompanied by his longtime girlfriend, Mary, they enjoyed traveling, cycling, fishing, visiting craft breweries, and spending time in Florida or at the family house in Cape Cod. As an ever-notorious proponent for having a good time, Michael had friends, or made new ones, everywhere he went. He was considered a "regular" at several local restaurants and bars. His contagious positivity and cheerful spirit brought those around him together, both familiar friends and close-sitting strangers. His cycling hobby turned into a mission when his son Daniel was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2003, followed by Steve and Joey later on. He raised over $250,000 riding for his sons over 17 consecutive years. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation: CCF - In honor of Michael Goepfert, 5526 West 13400 South, #510, Herriman, Utah 84096, USA. My wife and I and our two young daughters moved to quiet Ruops Road across the Street from the Geopferts, during the Dec. 1992 Nor'easter. When the snow finally melted there were little boys everywhere and they seemed to be multiplying? Our street quickly turned into street hockey central. I thought what did I do? At that point I decided I was getting the girls roller blades and hockey sticks, gloves, bats and put up a basketball hoop. That spring I was outside working in the yard and the man across the street came over to introduce himself. With his head cocked back to the side and looking out of a squinted eye he extended his hand and said, I'm Mike Giff- something? I loved his sense of humor and his sarcasm. I knew we would hit it off and I knew that we had a great neighbor. Mike was very generous and was always offering to help any time I needed it. In fact he was always trying to give me his Cocker Spaniel Cassie that trickled everywhere she walked inside and outside! When Mike and his clan moved through the woods to Adam Lane I regret that we lost contact. While Mike and his boys were going to sporting events I was taking my daughters to Girl Scouts and dance recitals. I would run into him around town and every time it was like our first meeting. I always laughed and left with a smile. I regret I did not keep better contact with Mike and I regret his boys did not take up dance. To Mrs. Geopfert, his brother and sisters and his boys; Mike, Steve, Dan, Brian and Joseph, Mike was a one-of-a kind guy that everyone benefited from his friendship. I am sorry for your sadness and it is impossible to say much to change that other than treasure the amazing time you had with him and keep his spirit alive.

We were stunned and saddened to here the news of Mikes passing. What a wonderful man and father. Of course our thoughts immediately turned to the endless skating and hockey in the wetlands between our houses that the Goepfert boys and our boys would do until it was too dark. If it wasnt our two families of boys skating among the trees it was the roller hockey in the culdesac or baseball at Lions Field. Mikes legacy will live on forever in not just the 5 boys, but all the young athletes of Tolland he coached, supported, and befriended. Our deepest condolences to Mike, Steve, Dan, Brian, and Joey and the rest of the Goepfert family. You are all so blessed to have your dad forever.

My wife and I had the privilege of meeting Mike and his family through youth hockey in the early 90's. Early mornings of JR. House practices at the Bolton Ice Palace. Helping us found the Connecticut Cyclones at UCONN. Aways being there for us. Mike, we need $500 for jerseys for the team Done. Mike, we need bag tags for the Cyclones Golf Tournament. Done. And on and on.....
I will always remember Mike as a guy who loved a great joke and a cold beer, of which we had many together. Dinners at Margaritaville in Storrs, parties at Cyclones parents homes. Although we had not seen Mike in the last few years, those memories are precious to us. We are so sorry to see him go, and we send heartfelt condolences to his whole family.
Rest in peace, Mike.
