NEWTON, Michael Edward
Michael Edward Newton, 57, died September 26 at home with his family after a 7-year fight with cancer. The son of Nancy and the late William Newton, he grew up in Rocky Hill and was named a Fullbright scholar during his senior year at high school. Michael graduated from Wesleyan University where he met his future bride, Mira Zalokar. They travelled to Seattle and then to Pullman, WA, where they both attended Washington State University. Michael's career took him and his young family to Arkansas, Florida and back to Seattle where Michael and his family have lived for the last 19 years. He always enjoyed history, reading books, learning new things and having great discussions with family and friends. As a member of the Mountaineers, he enjoyed exploring the mountains of the Northwest. He also commuted to work by bicycle, and always enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his wife, Mira; their two sons Jeremy and Douglas; and daughter, Vera; his mother Nancy Newton of Rocky Hill; five brothers Timothy, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Andrew, Donald; and one sister, Barbara; along with several aunts and cousins.

Mira, Doug, Jeremy and Vera, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am in disbelief. I have thought of you so often, and have run into Michael at Fred Meyer looking thin, but somehow the same. Most recently I thought of you after hearing that Doug spent some time with John up in Bellingham. My memories of times spent with your family are some of my fondest. I hope you are finding joy and comfort together as you grieve. Much love, Julie Petterson

Dear Mira, Jeremy, Douglas, & Vera,
We are so sorry for your loss. We crossed paths with Michael and your family over a number of years, first when our son Dillon and Jeremy played soccer on the same team, and then later when Brianna and Vera played unified soccer at Hale. Michael was clearly a devoted dad. He was always very pleasant, friendly and cheerful. We pray for peace and comfort for you.

Michael was always his own man, at a time and in a place when and where that may have been the hardest thing to be. Sounds like he never changed, in that regard, and had a rich and rewarding life. He was a good egg.

So very sorry to hear the news. The Newton brothers (sister too) were legendary in Rocky Hill for being smart, funny and most envied as a close knit family. I wish you all well during this very difficult time of transition.

Nancy and the Newton family:
We were saddened to hear of Michael's passing. I would not have made it out of high school Chemistry class without him as my lab partner.

Mike was a good friend and classmate in junior high and high school. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman and I regret that we lost touch. I'll always remember him fondly.

My deepest condolences to the Newton family. I considered Michael one of my close friends from High School, and always wondered how he was doing after we parted ways at graduation. I hope you all fare well and give each other strength through this ordeal ...

Great friend in HS, decent setback player, sat next to him in that memorable senior trip to England in 1973. God Bless the Newton family, Mike is now debating the Good Lord as we mourn.
