SMITH, Michael Thomas
Michael Thomas Smith, 28, of Collinsville, was granted his angel wings on Wednesday, (September 26, 2012). He was born November 16, 1983, a beloved son of Debra J. Keating of Farmington. He was a graduate of Oliver Wolcott Tech in Torrington, Class of 2002. Michael's life would seem too short for many, but for those who were touched by him understood that the quality of life far exceeds the quantity of time of which you live. Michael was a talented Chef having worked at The Village Café in Canton, Husk in Collinsville, and most recently Max-a-Mia in Avon. He was a former member of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department and past Deputy Chief of Canton EMS of which he was presented with multiple awards and recognitions. Michael was an avid mechanic, loved the outdoors, fishing, reading, and music. Michael had a wonderful sense of humor and always was there to lend a helping hand, offer sound advice and cooking for friends and family. Besides his loving mother Debra, he is survived by his twin brother Christopher Smith and Kristi Lynn Turrick; his niece and goddaughter Taygen Smith; his sister Mara Haley; his niece Kayla Haley, all of Farmington; as well as Scartlett Field of Collinsville, and her son Max, who he loved and cared for as his own son; Michael also leaves behind his grandmother Dorothy G. Keating of Farmington; his uncle, Michael F. Keating , his wife Barbara; and cousins Ryan, Maura and Kevin, all of West Hartford; and his Aunt Marguerite Glassman, her husband Steve Glassman; and cousins Ben, Hannah, and Tyler, all of South Windsor. Michael was predeceased by his grandfather, Michael J. Keating, who was an influential figure in his life. His memory will live on with his family and close friends, Kathy Donaldson, Mark Montefalco, Steve LaPointe, his brothers from the fire department and EMT, along with many others that he considered as his second family.
Calling hours will be held Monday, October 1, at Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Canton Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department, P.O. 168, Collinsville, CT, 06022. Mara, I remember playing with you and the twins 20+ years ago. I can't believe how long it has been! He was such a bright light, a darn funny kid. It seems he continued on to be that way his whole life. My love to you and your family. Kiss your mother for me.
