Dr. Nibedita Mitra

Devoted mother, grandmother and aunt, Dr. Nibedita Mitra passed away peacefully on March 13, 2023. Nibedita ("Nita") was born in New Delhi, India. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Delhi University, India, a M.S.C from Punjab University and a Ph.D. from Delhi University in Physical and Biological Anthropology.

In 1972, Nita married Asoke Mitra and later that year moved to the United States settling in Piscataway, New Jersey. After the devasting loss of her husband, Nita moved their family to West Hartford, Connecticut. Nita was a professor of anthropology and biological sciences at the University of Hartford and taught as an adjunct instructor in the biological sciences at Capital Community College and Tunxis Community College. She took great pride in working with students. She enjoyed traveling and thoroughly cherished time with her friends.

Family was her real love. She cared deeply and always treated them to intricate home cooked meals and relished moments with her children, grandchildren, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is survived by her sons, Amit Mitra, Aaron Mitra and daughter-in-law Beth Mitra, grandchildren Sophie and Bridget, sister Tapati Basu, niece Lolita Carrico, nephew Bob Basu and many other caring nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father Prafulla Chandra Biswas and her mother Binapani Bose Biswas, and sisters Arati Guha, and Minati Das.

Calling hours will be Friday, March 24, from 1pm-3pm at Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave. West Hartford, CT. At her request, there will be no other public service.
