Richard Carpenter Obituary

Richard Clark Carpenter, of East Norwalk, was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, as well as an acclaimed railroad historian and cartographer and longtime executive director of the Southwestern Regional Planning Agency. He was born in Wethersfield, where he graduated from Wethersfield High School in 1951. He died in March 0f 2020, when the Covid pandemic prevented any memorial service from taking place. Mr. Carpenter's wife of 61 years, Mary Jane Campbell Carpenter, died last week at her home in Windsor. The family will now hold a memorial mass for both of them Tuesday, Dec. 21, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in East Norwalk, where the couple were married in 1958. Mr. Carpenter is survived by his daughter Ellin (Matthew) Smith of Windsor; son John (Mary) of Nashville; grandchildren Diana Rose Smith, and Sally and Patrick Carpenter; sister Marion Lang of West Hartford; sister-in-law (Anne) of West Bloomfield, as well as many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jane Elizabeth; and his parents, Katherine and Phillip; and his brother Phillip.
