Richard Provost Obituary

Richard C. Provost "Dick", of Bloomfield, CT passed away peacefully in his home on May 29, 2022, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born on February 27, 1938, in Holyoke, MA, son of the late Leo and Bertha (Fournier) Provost, he was raised in South Hadley, MA and graduated from The University of Hartford - Hartt School of Music in 1960, with a degree in music composition. Dick spent his life sharing his passion for music and his musical talent with the world. He started his musical career when he was in middle school playing at jazz clubs and joined The Hartt School of Music in 1958 as an adjunct faculty, where he remained until he retired over sixty years later as a Professor Emeritus. In 1968, Dick founded the Guitar Program at The Hartt School of Music, which is the oldest, most developed performance-based guitar program in the country. Dick is regarded as a leading guitar pedagogue, with students that have won awards at major competitions throughout the U.S. and Europe. His contributions to the music world will live on forever. While Dick's musical talent was important to the success of his career, his genuine interest in and friendliness towards others were also important ingredients to his success. Dick's intellectual curiosity included music and extended to many other topics, which made Dick a very compelling conversationalist. There is a long list of people who called Dick a friend, and an even longer list who knew that if they wanted to find the best restaurant, they should follow Dick. After retirement, Dick poured his creative talents into his favorite hobby, photography. He joined the Simsbury Camera Club, became their Outings Coordinator and was able to participate in some wonderful adventures. Dick left behind a collection of photographs to memorialize the wonderful sights he encountered with the Club and on his travels with his wife Renee, throughout New England, NC, WV, Alaska and Iceland, which are available for your viewing pleasure at https://www.simsburycameraclub.com/author/rprovo and https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/richard-provost/shop. Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Renee Provost, and his children, Michael Provost of Rapid City, SD, Thomas Provost and his wife Natedow, of Coventry, CT, Michelle Provost and her husband John Mahon of Coventry, CT, Alison Berryman and her husband Gray of Southern Shores, NC, Dr. Emily Worthy and her husband Jason of Southern Shores, NC, his grandchildren, Michael Provost and his wife Victoria of Enfield, CT, Harlie Provost of Coventry, CT, Billy, Adlai, Stella and Lulu Berryman of Southern Shores, NC, Olivia and Jack Worthy of Southern Shores, NC, and his great granddaughter, Isabella Provost of Enfield, CT. I remember Richard going off to college when I was young and lived inn South Hadley Falls. I was a friend of Norman. We were Boy Scouts together.
May he rest in peace. It would be nice to connect with Norman.

As a longtime admiring colleague of Dick Provost at the University of Hartford, I think of him fondly every time I drive up or down Bloomfield Avenue. Dick was, of course, among the longest longtime colleagues we faculty members treasured. His fifty-years of service to students, school, and community far exceeded my mere thirty-five, both in quantity and quality. To all who knew Dick, and therefore loved him, I send my never-ending condolences. How privileged we were to know him.

Renee; I just learned of Dick's passing from Alan Hoffman, with whom I had lunch yesterday. I an deeply sorry for his passing and for being so late with this letter. He was the guitarist in my quartet as you may remember from our meeting many years ago. He was terrific! I couldn't have asked for a better guitar player and colleague. I know what you're feeling. I lost my wife, Olga this past January and am having a hard time dealing with it. Again, my condolences. I have nothing but fond memories of him and the wonderful times we had together.

Dick's talents for guitar teaching and performance were exceeded only by his talents for friendship. I well remember than when he retired after SIXTY years of inspiring service to the University of Hartford, a colleague said to me, "Was he born here?" Dick's day-glow smile and generosity of spirit were and remain gifts to all of us.

Dick was an extremely good and kind man. When I was a student, he was always interested in me, my progress, and my future. I have always held this support dear and precious. He recommended me to tutor a guitarist in music theory. I was deeply honored and prepared extensively. From these sessions came my decision to dedicate my career to teaching. I hold Dick as largely responsible for my choice. He and that guitarist would eventually marry. Renee, please accept my condolences and deep appreciation for what Dick meant to me and the importance of those times.

To Professor Provost´s Family:
First, my deepest sympathy. I had the pleasure knowing Dick while working at Hartt. Every time we passed one another in the hallway or at a meeting, he took the time to converse with me. He was genuinely engaged in those chats and I loved that about him. He was caring and compassionate and his students learned so much from his extraordinary talent in classical guitar. He was respected by all the faculty, students and staff. I mourn his loss a great deal. His legacy will live on in all those fortunate to learn from him. Again, my very deepest sympathy.

Dick was such a wonderful friend and colleague. Many fond memories of lunches out during my Hartt days (Blimpie!) and great recording sessions. Condolences to Renee and the family.
