Robert Cone Obituary

CONE, Robert I. Robert l. Cone, 86 of East Rupert, VT, passed away Thursday (April 17, 2008), at the Rutland regional medical Center. He was born in Middletown on June 23, 1921, the son of Oliver and Olga Cone. He grew up in West Hartford where he was graduated from Hall High. Here he played football and ice hockey, and in the summer months ran his own lawn mowing business. During World War II, Bob served in the Army Signal Corp and was based in Assam, India. Besides his regular duties he helped construct a local church, and also enjoyed experiencing the local teas and tea gardens. After the war, he attended the University of Connecticut. In 1950, Bob married Othelia Nilsson whom he met while living in Vermont. They settled in Simsbury and had three children, Carolyn, Susan and Peter. Othelia died in 1958. In 1963 bob moved his family to Manchester, VT where he continued to work as a residential designer and builder. In 1964 he married Judith Jost. They had two children, David and Martha. The couple later divorced. Bob loved to ski and hike. In later years he developed a taste for fine art, visiting many museums and galleries and even starting his own collection. He was always reading, mostly the Boston Globe, art books and anything related to large construction projects. He continued his love of building and woodworking up until his early 80's. His most precious enjoyment, however, was being with his family. Bob leaves his five children, Carolyn Cone of East Rupert, Susan Cone of East Arlington, VT, Peter Cone of Manchester, VT, David Cone of Burlington, VT and Martha Stein of Fort Collins, CO. he also leaves six grandchildren and three siblings; Elizabeth Abt of Weathersford, TX, Donald Cone of Avon and Mary Jane Spencer of West Hartford. Calling hours will be held at Brewster Funeral Home 34 Park Place Manchester, VT on Tuesday April 29, 2008 from 6 - 8 p.m. There will be no services. Burial will be in the Cone family plot in Middletown later this summer followed by a family gathering.
