Robert Ursery Obituary

URSERY, Robert Jr. "Spider" Robert "Spider" Ursery, Jr., 44, of Bloomfield, loving husband of Maxine Stewart Ursery, ascended into Heaven Sunday (August 3, 2008). Born in St. Louis, MO, son of Robert and Chrysantha (Smith) Ursery, Sr. of St. Louis, MO, he lived in East Hartford many years moving to Bloomfield four years ago. Besides his wife Maxine and his parents, he is survived by his children Krishna Williams and Mariano Flowers both of St. Louis and Robert Isaiah Ursery of East Hartford; two stepsons Brandon and Jordan Stewart both of Bloomfield; and a grandson Robert Williams; two brothers John Ursery and his wife Andrea and Rodney Ursery and his wife Lateesha; three sisters Andre, Angela, and Clarenza Ursery; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. Robert graduated from UCONN in 1989 with a BA in Economics. Known as "Spider", he played forward (#31) for the UCONN Huskies from 1985-1988. He played 76 games and was Co-Captain of the team in his senior year when he helped the team win its first ever National Invitational Tournament Championship in 1988. Robert was a Probation Officer in the City of Hartford for over 15 years and was a member of the Northside Church of Christ. Though his six-year battle with Hodgkins Disease left him frail; his unwavering faith, perseverance, and amazing courage to fight on against incredible odds is an encouragement and inspiration to us all. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 9, at the Manchester Church of Christ, 595 Tolland Turnpike, Manchester. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield followed by a reception at the Manchester Church of Christ. His family will receive friends Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Avenue, Windsor and Saturday from 9-10 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Contributions may be made to the Jim Calhoun Basketball Camp, PO Box 846, Avon, CT 06001, Att: Robert Ursery, Jr. Scholarship Fund, to help underprivileged young athletes. Mr. & Mrs. Ursery & Family,

I met Spider at Baden school in 5th grade. He was an extremely smart and funny guy that everyone liked. Spider enjoyed drawing and then later he worked very hard to become a great basketball player. We built and rode bicycles together, went skating, and hung out with his family on many occasions. Spider was one of my best friends. After Spider went off to college he would always make his visiting rounds whenever he was in St. Louis. He even had an itenerary book where he scheduled his visits since there were so many people he felt he needed to visit. As kids, we built and ride bikes together, and then later in life we would listen to music in his big, antique cars that his father fixed up especially for him. Spider was my buddy and I will truly miss him. May God bless Maxine and the Ursery Family, and keep them all strong.

Dear Maxine and Family; The Esdaile Family will miss Spider dearly. He was a good friend. As college students we had some good times and through the years we matured, became parents and the bond never diminished. The friendship was ever present. I certainly will miss his smile and that big hug he would always give me. So the flesh may be gone but certainly not the memories and the impact of having him as a friend. May God bless you, Spiders parents, siblings and children & may he keep your entire family in his arms resting with more peace each and every day.

In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,
God leads His dear children along;
Where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet,
God leads His dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,
Some through the fire, but all through the blood;
Some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
In the night season and all the day long.

Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright,
God leads His dear children along;
Sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,
God leads His dear children along.

Though sorrows befall us and evils oppose,
God leads His dear children along;
Through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,
God leads His dear children along.

Away from the mire, and away from the clay,
God leads His dear children along;
Away up in glory, eternity’s day,
God leads His dear children along.

My deepest sympathy to Maxine and Family.

From the Esdaile Family: You have our deepest sympathy. Spider spent many holiday's with us during the time he was at Uconn, Thansksgiving/Easter/Christmas etc... He was a part of our family, for me like another brother. I attended Uconn with him while he was there, and then years later had the privilege of being able to work with him at Hartford Adult Probation. There is only one Spider, and he will truly be missed.
Love Always,
Michele Esdaile

To the family of "Spider"

I met Spider about 6 years ago when I started working at the Office of Adult Probation in Hartford. Everything about him was "big" - his frame, his smile, and his heart. Words cannot express the loss all the families he was a part of are feeling right now - at home, at UConn, and at Hartford Adult Probation. I have said for a long time that I have never known one person to fight the battle the way Spider has... he truly has been and will forever be an inspiration. My deepest condolences during this time of grieving. May everyone know that he is at peace with his newest "family" --- there is true comfort knowing that.

To "Spider's family" - I had the pleasure of working with Spider at Hartford Adult Probation. Please know that he will always be a part of this office and the Hartford Probation family. I have been told that your family is deeply religious. I know that when we are here on earth we can not always make sense of someone's death or suffering. God some times has a different plan for us. God always knows what he is doing though, so we just have to trust that. I know that he is in a better place. He was a "fighter" and I know that it is because of his strength in God that he was able to get through these difficult years. It will be because of your family's faith and love for one another that you will get through these difficult days, months and years ahead. When someone passes their spirit lives on through their loved ones. You all have an angel in heaven. Sincerely, Crystal

My daughter will be attending the University of Connecticut starting this year and she is very excited about the entire experience. While Spiders passing will leave a great physical void, its nice to know that our memory of the great things that he did in life will live forever at Gampel Hall.
God Bless you All.

Robert's Journey Home

His body was tired of this world here below.
He waited patiently to hear God's call.
When it came, he was ready, and surrendered all -
To be with our Savior, in His loving care -
To join friends and family and with them share
The Lord's boundless love and endless grace;
He is with Jesus now in His warm embrace;
He waits again patiently - for you and me,
Till we leave this Earth, finally free,
To meet him again and share his delight,
As we enter the city that has no night.

***************************
May God continue to richly bless, hold and keep you and yours now and always.

Love the Priester Family

To the Family of "Spider":
Words can't really express the sadness in my heart for your lost. My family and I have many fond memories of time spent with Spider and will always remember his zest for life. He was my "BIG" brother and I'm definitely going to miss him. My peace is knowing he is no longer in pain but resting. I pray that you find comfort in knowing "If we're believers in Christ, we can be confident that death is an open door to eternal life with Jesus" Love Ya Always...Vanessa
