When my brother Ed entered nbhs in 1984 and joined the football team with Todd, Tommy Petrisko and Bobby Breu I was 10 yrs old. But I used to play pickup games with them on weekends and I got to learn and understand the game by playing with them. So, from what my brother Ed learned from Coach Verdi and Tommy's father, Coach Paul Petrisko, he was able to instill in me. I remember how sad I was when coach retired when Todd graduated in '88. I was a freshman in Sept. 89 and just missed reuniting with Coach Verdi.

To Sal's loving family,
It was my pleasure to teach with Sal at both Slade and NBHS. He always had a smile, a back pat, a "good job " for each student but just as important for each teacher. Maybe that was the inner coach in him. My warmest memories connect to his attitude toward our Special Ed students. At Slade (prior to any federal mandates) Sal was one of the first to say yes to having some of our very physically disabled students join in his classes. Why not? That was his attitude. The problem was there was no elevator. How to get these students upstairs? Sal had the answer. He just got a buddy and carried the wheelchair with the student right up to the second floor. Can you imagine how much fun that was and what kind of trust was involved? That was how things were years later when he was a guidance counselor for many of my students. He would ask if whatever I was requesting was going to be good for a student and once assured of this he would figure a way to make whatever we needed to do possible. It was such a relief to see that students were assigned to him because you knew that he would work extra to make sure that the Special Needs students had the fairest treatment they could get. It was all about the kids.Yes ,he was fun and handsome and he had the sports thing going for him but it was his focus on each student making them feel that they were important that really made the difference. That must have been the case when he was with his family too. How lucky you all were. I hope that you can keep all of the good memories close to your hearts.

To the family, The first time I met Mr. Verdi was when I was a 3rd grader and attended Camp School. Mr. Verdi was the student teacher in my classroom and I couldn't believe how big and strong looking he was, Mr. Verdi was quite intimidating for a little girl (that's me:)! Then, our lifes crossed paths again this time at the high school. I told him where I first met him, he couldn't believe after all those years we were working side my side. What a gentle man with a big heart and hearty laugh, and how proud he was when he spoke about his wife, children and grandchildren. May the Lord bless you all and help you in your time of grieving.
L. Jones- New Britain, CT. P.S. Thank you Mr. Verdi, for coming into my life as well!
