Sandra HAMER Obituary

HAMER, Sandra K. Sandra K. Hamer passed away peacefully in the home that she loved in Stephentown, NY, on July 31, 2010. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Sandy graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1960 and then moved to Cleveland where she held public relations positions at Diamond Shamrock, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and two television stations. Her love of skiing took her to Massachusetts where she lived in Lenox for a year while working at the Pittsfield Chamber of Commerce. She then moved to Hartford, CT, where there were more employment opportunities and worked for the Downtown Council. In 1978 she realized her dream of owning her own business and opened Hamer Associates through which she managed projects in both the profit and non-profit sectors. After moving to Stephentown in 2000, she continued to operate her business from home until 2003 when she retired. Since retirement, she has remained very busy in volunteer efforts for Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox and for the Stephentown Historical Society. Retirement also allowed her to travel more, a pastime she thoroughly enjoyed. Sandy will be sorely missed by her life partner, Judith Pierson, as well as by her multitude of friends from all stages of her life. She also leaves several cousins in Ohio and Florida. A celebration of her life will be held later in Hartford, CT. Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144 whose wonderful staff made her final days so comfortable.

Sandy and I went to elementary, high school and then to Bowling Green University together. The last time we were together was at a class reunion for Linden McKinley High. We were, of course, laughing because we thought we must be at the wrong place ... "we couldn't possibly have graduated so long ago".

Many happy hours were shared with her and her family. I celebrate her life and friendship.

I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Sandy and Judy for 30 years. Their friendship was a prized possession.

I had the priviledge and great fun of working with Sandy many times on projects, and doing voice overs for her clients who hired her to write ads for the radio. We had a lot of laughs.
I admired her intelligence, her humor and her great talent.

I shall miss her.

Sandy mentored me when I came back to CT. She was generous with her kindness and shared her wisdom of the business and life so willingly. I will miss her exuberance and her smile. I am so very glad we crossed paths. I know my life was made better for it.

I was startled to read of Sandy Hamers recent passing. I knew she had been seriously ill, but I also knew that she had fought and won many battles in her life. I had not been in touch with her recently but she and Judy were people who made you feel better just knowing they were out there.

I first met Sandy when she was asked to write the announcement of my appointment as President of Hartford College for Women. A friendship grew out of that collaboration. As she notified the press of my appointment she naturally included my age. So the opening line was "Marcia Savage. 40, has been appointed, etc." What neither of us considered was that every time my name appeared in print there after..reporters went back to the original release and with out thinking repeated Sandy's opening line. Therefore, for more than 5 years I never aged. Never before, or since, has anyone done me such a favor.
We shall miss Sandy, her strength, her humor, and her diligence.

what can be said to really identify Sandy. She was sure one of the most special people any of us can have known. Her sense of humor and timing were above any and all expectations, how will I ever have Thanksgiving dinner with out her turkey suggestions. My dearest wishes will always be with her.

Sandy was our friend and neighbor. Her ready laugh and quick sense of humor were always evident. When she worked on a project, her efforts were tireless. If she set her sights on fund raising, rest assured...funds were raised. We are all better people for having known, worked with and "lunched with" Sandy.

I knew Sandy and Judith in the seventies and continue to think of them often, especially when I drive down Arnoldale Rd, or by the old GHCC. When we moved to E Haddam, down the road from the Goodspeed, I remembered the year that Sandy, Judith, Marilyn and I had season tickets. I have very fond memories of that season except for the one night when I had just gotten word that I had fallen short on my judgeship bid.
Sandy was, indeed a class act and an inspiration for people who were considering going into business for themselves. She was also an inexhaustible worker, laying in a brick patio at their W Hartford home.
I treasure my friendship with Judith and Sandy and I was very sad to learn of her death.

Sandy was a bright and positive person, always willing to help with any project. Her work for the Stephentown Historical Society was outstanding and always professional. I'm sure her efforts for other organizations were no less. She added more than a touch of class to any activity. We shall all miss her deeply.

Amazing, I was just thinking of Sandy the other day. We both worked at the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce in the early 1970's. She was a very classy lady.

One of my favorite stories is how she was cut off by another car one day to work and gave the universal sign of being "peeved". What a shock when it turned out that the "cutter off" was a mutual friend.

My deepest sympathies.

I knew Sandy when I worked with her as a high school intern on the Hartford Arts Fest. She was a great mentor and an inspiration. I was saddened to hear of her passing.

Sandy and I were professional colleagues for many years and it was a special privilege to know and work with her. She was a class act and will indeed be sorely missed.
