AUBIN, Sophie Thomas
Sophie Thomas Aubin, 85, formerly of Simsbury and Granby, CT, passed away peacefully on (October 13, 2011) at the Loomis Village Nursing Home in South. Hadley, MA, Sophie was born on October 8, 1926 in Southbridge, MA, daughter of Thomas and Joanna Cristo. With the encouragement of her brother John, Sophie entered UMASS at the tender age of 16, where she earned a degree in teaching. At barely 5 feet tall and 100 pounds, Sophie looked more like a student than a teacher, but she successfully taught math for several years in the Amherst school system until she met her future husband, the late William E. Aubin. Sophie then devoted herself to raising her four sons, who were the center of her world. She supported her boys in their unique endeavors and was the ultimate hockey mom, attending as many as 200 games/year. Sophie enjoyed sewing, gardening, and bowling, and was a longtime member of the Simsbury Farms 9-holer group. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving and every year she hosted a wonderful and memorable gathering of family and friends. Sophie also was renowned for her summer pool parties with the ladies, and with her own children, grandchildren and their friends. Her hospitality extended to everyone who came to Sophie's Spa & Grille and was lucky enough to sample her famous spanakopita. Sophie was very proud of her Albanian heritage and was fortunate to visit her parent's homeland with sons John and Greg. Sophie is survived by her 4 sons, Bill Jr. and his wife Brenda of Northboro, MA; Chris and his wife Barb of West Simsbury, CT; John and his wife Maggie Bergin of Holyoke, MA; and Greg Aubin of Greenfield, MA. Sophie was especially close with her grandchildren, babysitting often and being an active and well-loved participant in their lives. She leaves behind six grandchildren Erica, Lindsay, Nicholas, Bill, Hayley and Alice. She also will be missed by her lifelong friend, Rose Luchini.
