Steven Johnson Obituary

Steven James Johnson, 57, of Farmington, formerly of Stamford, beloved husband of Ella M. Scafidi-Johnson, passed away unexpectedly on December 1, 2023.

Steve was born on June 27, 1966, in Stamford, CT, to Donald Johnson and Catherine Mennona. He graduated J.M Wright Technical High School, 1984. Steve worked in Stamford at East Side Variety, his father's carpeting business, Harbor Deli, and Pitney Bowes Corporation as First Officer and Operations Manager.

In 2001, Steve and Ella moved to Farmington where he began working at the University of Hartford. He held positions of Public Safety Officer, Field Training Officer, Quartermaster, Corporal, and Sergeant before changing career paths and joining the Lock Shop where he became a Certified Facilities Locksmith. While there, he pursued a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and privately studied Cyber Security.

From 2015-17, Steve and Ella moved to Jupiter, FL where he worked for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security before returning to Farmington to continue his 20-year tenure at the University of Hartford.

From 1980-94, he played Stamford Street Hockey, and Waterbury Dec Hockey where he was named Captain, winning multiple championships, scoring titles, and MVP awards on the Flyers. In 2007, he continued his passion for hockey on various Plainville Indoor Sports Arena teams. Steve also played Jai Alai and semi-professional tennis. He was an outstanding athlete.

Steve enjoyed his traveling adventures. He looked forward to his yearly trips to Block Island with Ella. They most recently vacationed in Bermuda, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. This year, Steve and Ella captured countless photos and memories seeing their favorite bands. His hobby was collecting Hess trucks and proudly shared his incredible display with family and friends.

Steve was predeceased by his mother, Catherine, father, Donald, and uncle, Sonny. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Ella, and their dog Loki; his children, Steven and Taylor Johnson; two grandchildren, Emma and Eli; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Courtney Ouellette; his mother-in-law Rina Scafidi, his brothers and sister-in-law, Donald, Jeffrey and April Johnson, and his aunt Mary Ann Carson.

Steve was fiercely loyal, had a keen mind, a hardworking nature, and a great sense of humor. He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh and kind heart.

A public memorial will be held Sunday, December 17, 2023, 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Plainville Indoor Sports Arena, 161 Woodford Avenue in Plainville, to celebrate Steve's life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Steven J. Johnson Memorial Fund on GoFundMe or by planting a tree in his Book of Memories at www.vincentfuneralhome.com.

My deepest condolences go out to Ella, Steven and Taylor.
Steve was so happy to have found you Ella and he was so proud of Steven and Taylor for all your accomplishments and would brag about you as the proud father he was!
Those nights playing hockey with Steve were so much more then just hockey. We were all great friends. Some of my best momories were riding up to the games together and back home talking about the games and stopping for dinner. One of the things that made those nights so special is that all of us (Paul, Gary, Steve, Bob and myself) were all going through tough times in our lives but being together and having that special night made all of that go away even for a short period of time. Playing hockey together was our theropy. #6 will always have a place in my heart!
