William Sakowicz Obituary

William "Bill" Sakowicz, 93, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at CT Hospice, Branford, CT. Bill was born June 20, 1925 and was the son of the late William and Julia (Abramowicz) Sakowicz. He was a lifelong New Britain resident from the "Great Generation", serving his country from 1943 to 1946 with the Sixth Marine Division as well as First Marine War Dog Platoon, having served in Okinawa during the Battle of the Pacific. Bill was husband to Rose Sardo for sixty-three years until her passing in 2011. He was employed at Middle Atlantic, Miramar, Cody's and he retired from CCSU after twenty-two years. He was the "go-to" man for anything to be built or fixed. Bill also enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds, woodworking and his bus trips to the casino…..last trip was in October. Fiercely independent, he drove his car up to four months ago. Bill was grateful to have the opportunity in 2012 to fly to Washington D.C. as part of the American Warrior "Day of Honor" program to visit the war memorials. He was a proud member of the Marine Corps League, the American Legion, Elks, VFW and Spartans.Bill is survived by his three daughters, Linda (Richard) Huck, Elizabeth (Michael) Choquette and Sandra Andrews (John Sanstrom), who helped care for him these past few months. He leaves his sister, Sister Mary Alma, of the Daughters of Mary and his sisters-in-law, Janice and Mary Sakowicz. Bill was proud of his nine grandchildren, Jason, John, Michael, David and Alan Huck, Crystal Beyer, Maile Vega, Adam Mercado and Sharon Andrews. Bill loved seeing photos of his eighteen great grandchildren and anticipated the arrival of his nineteenth, a boy, due this April. In addition, he had six great great grandchildren. Bill enjoyed connecting with family in Connecticut and Massachusetts and leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was predeceased by his son Billy in 1988, his brothers Robert and Richard and sisters Clare Chesanek and Dorie Di Pinto his granddaughter, Carissa Andrews and great grandson, Levi Avitabile.Funeral rites for Bill will be held Monday, February 25, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. with the procession departing at 9:00 a.m. from the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, 764 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT., followed by a Liturgy of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. Burial with full military honors rendered by the United States Marines will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, 662 Burritt St., New Britain, CT. The American Flag will be presented to Bill's daughter, Linda. Relatives and friends may call at the Paul A. Shaker Funeral Home, Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Directions to funeral home – I-84 east or west, exit 37 (Fienemann Rd) right off exit – one mile down on right. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to American Warrior, P.O.
