J. Pentecost Obituary

Pentecost, Dr. J. Dwight Dr. J. Dwight Pentecost, distinguished professor emeritus of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary went to be with his Lord and Savior, whom he greatly loved, on April 28, 2014. Born in Chester, PA, on April 24, 1915, he lived to be 99 and taught for 58 years at Dallas Theological Seminary, teaching his last class with excellence in Dec 2013. "Dr. P," as he was affectionately known by his 10,000+ students, began at DTS in 1937. Following graduation, he served in two pastorates in PA and also taught at Philadelphia Bible Institute. He returned to DTS to complete his doctorate in theology and was invited to join the faculty. From 1958-1973, Dr. P served concurrently as a DTS professor and senior pastor of Grace Bible Church in Dallas. He volunteered at Luke's Closet, a ministry that provides donated clothing and items to students for free. Many students remember him measuring and tailoring their clothes to fit. As author of 21 books, the scholar was best known for Things to Come, which focused on the end times. He knew and loved the Word of God and the God of the Word. He is beloved and respected worldwide and will be greatly missed. Dr. P is survived by his daughter, Jane Fenby and husband, Frank; granddaughter Kara Ledkins and husband, Logan; grandson John Arnold and wife, Ashley; and son-in-law, Donn Arnold. He was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 62 years, and daughter, Gwen Arnold. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Dallas Theological Seminary, 3909 Swiss Ave, Dallas 75204. He will be buried at Restland Memorial Park at a private service. A celebration of his life will be held on Wed., May 7, at 3:00 on the DTS campus, which can also be viewed live online. I feel like I knew Dr. Pentecost - it was a 1967 copy of his "Prophecy for Today" book that helped solidify my escatological beliefs back in the 1970's. I had SO hoped he would be part of The Rapture! I look forward to meeting him someday, perhaps soon. Blessings to the family of this influential writer, who, even with his high degrees, could write where all of us could understand.

This man was a total blessing in every sense of the word: an exceptional expositor of Scripture, a model in Christian ministry, a true servant of Christ. I am so deeply honoured to have known and loved this man.

Dear Sir, bless you and yours.

I never sat in a classroom with you.

Yet, I was a serious learner from reading and listening closely to your voice.

As a Christian stay-at-home mom of a large family.

Your books were like holding profound words in my hands, as I placed the words into my mind.

Nothing changed me more (except the bible itself) than your book: Words and Works of Jesus Christ.

Again, simply profound words and a book I continual in past twenty years told honest seeking Christians: If you read no other book outside of the bible. Please read: Words and Works by Pentecost.

Thank you for what you gave to my life, children and now to grandchildren through your teachings.

I know when I reach heaven, I shall be able to sit in your class and you will have knowledge of Heaven and be willing to teach us whom come after.

Quaker belief follower of Jesus Christ.

A truly obedient servant of God. The third great stepping stone in my life. Remembering a few of his words I quote: " To glorify God is to respond rightly to the revelation of His glory".

A giant upon whose shoulders we might stand in order to gain a better view of things to come. In life he served and reflected God's glory, shining light, love and wisdom to his students. He stands now forever more in the presence of his Lord and Savior!
