Dr. David E. Hall
June 5, 1950 - February 3, 2022
Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. David E. Hall, resident of Helena, Montana, went to be with our Lord due to complications from a short bout with COVID. He died on February 3, 2022, at the age of 71 in Flagstaff, AZ where he was traveling with his wife, Nancy, to escape the Montana winter weather.
David was born June 5, 1950, in Eastern Oregon to Harriet and Gene Hall. Dave graduated from Heppner High School in 1968. He was the Oregon FFA State Reporter 1968-69 and the Associated Students of Oregon State University Student Body President in 1970. David married the love of his life, Nancy Richardson, in June 1970. He was a brother in the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, a Mason, an Elk, and a member of the FFA Alumni and numerous other professional organizations. He had received his Honorary American FFA Degree; Honorary State FFA Degrees in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Montana; and Honorary Degrees in multiple local FFA chapters around the country. David held numerous offices and served on committees for the Oregon Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association, The National Association of Supervisors of Agricultural Education (President 2003-04); National Association of Agricultural Education (treasurer); The National Council for Agricultural Education (board member 2003-05); National FFA Board of Directors (consultant); and Member of National FFA and Foundation Board of Trustees (1992-93).
David completed his Bachelor of Science Degree (1973) and Master's Degree (1979) at Oregon State University in Agricultural Education. He was the high school agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Wallowa, Oregon from 1975-86. He ventured to The Pennsylvania State University in 1986 to obtain his PhD in Agricultural Education (1990). He was an instructor in the College of Agriculture and Extension Education teaching students to be ag teachers while completing his course work. Thereafter, he was an Assistant Professor at Penn State until 1994 when he and Nancy moved back to Prineville, Oregon where he taught high school agriculture and was the FFA advisor until 1997. He and Nancy moved to Montana to become the Montana Agriculture Education Specialist and State Advisor working with state FFA officers from 1997-2006. Dave was the WIRED-MAP grant manager at the Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education (OCHE), Montana University System from 2006-10. He also served as chairman of the National Council for Agricultural Education Committee writing the original National Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Standards from 2005-10. Dave was the COLLEGE!NOW grant coordinator for OCHE from 2010-14 when he retired.
His family was the pride of his life. His life was filled with family activities, travel, and lots of fun. They had traveled to all 50 states and numerous countries. He doted on his wife, daughters, sons-in law, and grandchildren, and seldom missed an activity for any of them. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Jodi Koterba (Cory); Linda Brown (Kevin); grandchildren Victoria (Jacob), Amber (Sheldon), Katie (Ian), Cody and Mary; and brother John Hall (Maureen) and nephews Jason and Jeff and family.
There will be a celebration of life held on Saturday, March 5 at 1:00 pm at Covenant United Methodist Church, 2330 E Broadway Street, Helena, MT. It would be fun if all were dressed in orange and black (for OSU) or blue and gold (for FFA). Dave was a work colleague at OCHE several years ago. He was so invested and loyal to ag ed! I also remember that he spoke of his family often, and loved his family very, very much. We heard many stories about those wonderful daughters and grandchildren! My thoughts are with his family at this time.
