Lottie Grossberg Obituary

Lottie Cohen Grossberg passed away on July 14, 2008, with her family at her side. Just two days earlier she had celebrated her 85th birthday.

Lottie was born to Samuel and Fannie Liberman Cohen on July 12, 1923, in Chelsea, Mass., and was raised in the Boston area. In 1948, Lottie and Allan L. Grossberg were married in Boston and settled in Buffalo, N.Y., after living for a short time in both Philadelphia and Montreal, where Allan attended graduate school. During this time, Lottie and Allan had four children together, two born in Philadelphia and two in Montreal.

Lottie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. In addition, she was a valued volunteer for the Braille Society and at elementary schools doing readings and assisting children. Lottie was active in the Jewish Family Services, where she helped immigrants assimilate into the community, and with PACE (Parent Aide Community Effort), where she assisted troubled families in finding resources to meet their needs. She was a life member of Hadassah.

Lottie loved to travel. She and Allan enjoyed trips to Europe, Japan and Israel. In later years, she traveled worldwide with close friends, including an African safari, a trip to the Mediterranean, excursions across Canada and Australia and a variety of other destinations. But more than anything, she loved the time she spent with her grandchildren. Lottie was a dear friend to all who knew her. She set an example as an independent, can-do woman and encouraged others to follow their dreams as well. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Lottie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Allan, in 1979. She is survived by her four children, Philip (Karlene) Grossberg of Helena, Marlyn Atkins of Clancy, Joanne (Michael) Berger of Williamsville, N.Y., and Irene (Chuck) DiMaria of East Amherst, N.Y. In addition, Lottie has nine wonderful grandchildren, Jamie, Nikki and Micah Grossberg, all of Montana, and Alon, Jennifer and Aliza Berger and Aaron, Emily and Lauren DiMaria, all of New York. She is also survived by her brother, Saul Cohen of Boston; her sister-in-law, Jean Weeks of Helena; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the caring staff at the Cooney Home for taking good care of Lottie during her short stay in Montana. We also appreciate the support we received from Hospice-HomeLink of St. Peter's. A private family service is planned at the Home of Peace Cemetery in Helena. A memorial service will also be held in Buffalo, N.Y., at a later date. Memorials in memory of Lottie may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Montana Chapter, 3010 11th Ave. N., Billings, MT 59101, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
