David Pancake Obituary

DAVID MATTHEW PANCAKE, 81, of Huntington, WV, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 24, 2025 at home. He was born in Huntington, WV on May 4, 1943 and graduated from Huntington High School in 1961, Marshall University in 1966, and West Virginia University College of Law in 1971. David was an attorney in private practice from 1971 to 1998, when he was appointed by Governor Cecil Underwood to be a Circuit Judge for the 6th Circuit in Cabell County. He ran successfully for reelection three times and retired from the bench on January 31, 2014. Being a judge was the highlight of David's professional career. He worked tirelessly to be a fair and well-prepared judge, often arriving at the courthouse before dawn. As much as he enjoyed his career, the true joy of his life was his family. David is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane Holswade Pancake, and his three precious daughters, Katherine (Phillip), Jane Ann (David), and Molly, who were wonderfully involved with his care during his illness. He also leaves behind three grandchildren who brought him so much pride and joy, Milleah, Breece, and Gram. He is also survived by his younger brother Tim of Melbourne, Florida and two sisters-in-law, Kay Pancake of Huntington and Debbie Pancake of Bradenton, Florida. David leaves behind many nieces and nephews in both the Pancake and Holswade families who have fond memories of growing up with the jokester and good fun Uncle Dave. He will be missed by his buddies with whom he enjoyed many evenings of tomfoolery.
David was predeceased by his father Paul, mother Martha, step-mother Myrtle, and siblings Mary Ann, Paul, Dan, John, and Stephen.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday February 8, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Jana Stoner officiating. Visitation will be held beforehand from Noon to 2 p.m. in Smith Hall at the church. Graveside services will be private for the family. Klingel-Carpenter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Stephen Petrany, Anita Smith, Tobyan Wells, and John Manifold for their love and care during David's illness.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Team for West Virginia Children/Western Regional CASA (PO Box 1653, Huntington WV, 25717), Hospice of Huntington (PO Box 464, Huntington WV 25709), or Fifth Avenue Baptist Church (1135 Fifth Avenue, Huntington WV, 25701).

Although it´s been many moons since I saw Uncle Dave, just the thought of that funny man makes me smile. And nobody but Dave loved my Dad as much as my Mother. I can´t think of the porch in Chautauqua without thinking of Uncle Dave. Peace and light to Aunt Jane, Katherine, Jane Ann and Molly.

I'm am so sorry for our loss! I have thought about David constantly since his passing. He was so charismatic and larger than life. Everyone loved him so much. We served on city Council for a number of years, and he was so helpful to me while we served. He can't be replaced. His friend , Hreg Hawkins
