Eleanor Terry Obituary


DR. ELEANOR HATTEN STEPHENS TERRY, 92, of Ceredo-Kenova, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, W.Va. The celebration of her life will be conducted at Rollins Funeral Home on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dave Akers officiating. Burial will follow in Dock's Creek Cemetery. She was born January 5, 1932, a daughter of the late Forrest William and Martha Plymale Hatten of Kenova. She received both bachelor's and master's degrees from Marshall College, the M.S.L.S. degree from the University of Kentucky, and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. She taught elementary and middle school students at Ceredo, W.Va., Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, Fort Knox, Ky., Nellingen, Germany, and Misawa, Japan. She taught at Marshall University, taking an early retirement in 1989, after which she set up a medical library for King's Daughters and Sons Medical Center from June 1989 to June 1990. She had applied to return to the Department of Defense and was sent to Japan for four years.
After retiring from the Department of Defense, she returned home and joined the Saints Alive Choir where she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kenova, and eventually directed the Saints Alive Christian Senior Citizen's Choir for 21 years, singing at nursing homes, retirement homes and senior citizens centers every week.
The following are additional memberships, awards and honors: member of the first Ceredo Beautification Committee from 1995 to 1997, edited the Ceredo Newsletter, which later became the New Crescent; member of the Beta Phi Mu Science Honorary; the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary; Phi Kappa Delta Education Honorary; was awarded the Edgar Dale Memorial; received an award for service to Media/Librarianship of the State of West Virginia, which was presented at the AECT National Convention in Las Vegas, Nev., 1986, and lastly was selected to be a member of Kenova Elementary's Wall of Fame.
She is survived by two daughters, Dr. Sheryl Stephens and her husband Lannie Rowe, and Jan Terry; two sons, Dr. Michael Stephens, and Bruce Terry; three granddaughters, Kelsey Terry, Rachel Terry, and Barno Saturday; two grandsons, Mark Stephens and Seton Rowe and his wife Jessica; three great-granddaughters, Athena, Aurora, and Addison, and one great-grandson, James.
