Gerald Warren Sutphin

GERALD WARREN SUTPHIN, 85, passed away on August 16, 2024. Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Lenora after 63 years of marriage, his brother Stephen and his wife Johndra from Beckley, WV, and nephews Zackary and Matthew Sutphin from Florida. Jerry is a nationally known River Historian. He retired from the US Army, Corps of Engineers and twenty years from Visual Information Limited. He taught Elderhostel classes concerning the river at Marshall University as well as provided historical presentations on many large sternwheel boats excursions on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Did a number of river exhibits including three at Huntington Museum of Art, the Smithsonian in Washington. D.C. and others at various museums throughout the country. He made several DVD's and wrote several books about the rivers. He was very active in the community as past president of Rotary, as well as a Paul Harris fellow, City Club, Huntington Museum of Art, Cabell County Historical Society and other organizations. Active in Home Builders Class, Fifth Avenue Baptist Church. Visitation will be held at the Fifth Avenue Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from noon to 2 p.m. with the funeral immediately after the visitation.
