HOWARD GLENN "BEAR" MOORE

1925 - 2018

HOWARD GLENN "BEAR" MOORE was born September 12, 1925, and passed away October 20, 2018, at the age of Ninety Three years, One month and Eight days. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna McComas Moore, and his parents, the late Lina and Zach Moore. He is survived by one stepdaughter, Gloria Woodall Prichard; one daughter, Shelia Plumley (Robert); and one son, Glen H. Moore. He had four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Howard earned the nick name "Bear-Cat" for being such an aggressive football player at Guyan Valley High School. In his early days he worked as a coal miner and on gas drilling rigs. Later he managed the Esso Station in West Hamlin, W.Va., and later also managed the Wildcat Restaurant that used to be beside the Guyan Valley High School. He dabbled in politics. In 1953, he ran for Sheriff on the Republican ticket and got beat by one vote. Howard was an avid gardener and sports enthusiast. During the 1950s and '60s, he coached "knot-hole" baseball teams in the West Hamlin, W.Va., and Hamlin, W.Va., areas. His final job was a rural mail carrier between Hamlin, W.Va., Alum Creek, W.Va., and points between for thirty-two years. After his retirement, he and his son Glen spent their winters near Vero Beach, Fla., and summers near Hamlin, W.Va., working in his gardens. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin, W.Va., with Pastor David Burch officiating. Interment will follow at Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin, W.Va.
