John Van Matre Obituary

JOHN A. VAN MATRE III passed peacefully in his home, January 4th, 2024. John was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, working as a Structural Engineer. He is preceded in death by his parents Margaret and John A. Van Matre II, his wife of 59 years Sue, brother Martin, and grandson Caleb. John is survived by his daughter Becka and her wife Farrah who were his primary caregivers, son Joey (Amber) and three grandchildren, Baylee Saunders (A.J McComas), Brianna Van Matre (Jordan), Tori Van Matre, and one great-grandson, Asher. John also leaves behind two sisters-in-law, Linda Van Matre and Judy Williams and two nieces, Karen Dolk (Ryan) and Robin Williams. An adopted granddaughter Megan Anderson (Charlie) and their three children Trenton, Spencer, and Charli as well as two special ex- daughters-in-law, Kelley Ball and Lynn Sullivan. The family would also like to recognize a very special friend, Angie Bails who helped take care of John when his health began to decline. John had two very special granddogs, Marci Grace and Cornell Lyn and six grandcats that meant the world to him. Honoring the request of John, there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The National Parks Foundation, Pitiful Paws, and Hospice of Huntington. Chapman's Mortuary is assisting the family.
