Leandra Smith Obituary

MRS. LEANDRA SMITH, lovingly known to everyone as Cotton, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 12, 2025, in Clover, SC, at the age of 89. Cotton was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was so loved and lived a wonderful, successful, happy life in WV and in SC. Cotton was born in 1935 in Man, WV, to the late Andrew Mazon and Eleanora Mazon Griffith. Her beloved husband of 59 years, Edward "Obbie" Smith Jr., preceded her in death in 2018. Cotton will be missed immensely but we have peace knowing he was waiting on her as she entered heaven. Cotton was so special and impacted many lives in a positive way. She graduated from Marshall University as salutatorian and went on to have a successful career at Huntington Alloys in Huntington, WV. She was a fantastic dancer and loved being part of the Haylofters square dancing group that performed weekly during the live Saturday Night Jamboree TV show. Cotton was incredibly active and was an avid golfer and bowler. She was good at everything she tried. She was a lifelong member of Barboursville Baptist Church and served for years as secretary, sang in the choir, and was an active member however she was needed. Cotton was kind, loving, smart beautiful, and always the "life of the party." She was fancy, loved anything sparkly, and never went anywhere without lipstick. Her last 5 years were spent in SC and her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter feel incredibly blessed to have had that time with her and to enjoy her living so close. She will be forever missed and loved. Survivors are her son Michael Smith of Barboursville, WV; daughter Kristi S. Adkins (Ronnie) of Clover, SC; grandchildren Christopher (Leah) Smith, Emily Smith, Ruby Adkins, Matthew Adkins; great-grandchildren Lucia, Liam, and Landon; and brothers Andrew (Charlotte), Rick, Steve (Jimmie Sue), and Paul (Donna). Cotton also had a special place in her heart for her nieces, Alycia and Sherri. Grief is the last act of love we have to give those we loved so dearly. Where there is deep grief, there was great love. Services in WV and SC are being planned for the future. My good friend is now in heaven. We knew each other at Man High School, but we were best buddies at Marshall. When she and others formed the Man High Reunion, I had the joy of getting to see this lovely wonderful lady every other year for 26 years. My prayers are with you, family of Cotton. Love, Linda Jo Harless Bailey,

So sorry to hear. Cotton and I worked together for many years. I watched her square dance on Saturday Night. Also, played golf with her many times (she always beat me). She was a great golfer. Please accept my sincere condolences. Ken Koerber

Cotton used to dance on the Saturday Night Jamboree with my father“s square dancing group. She always took great care of herself and it showed. She was a fun person to be around - a person of many admirable qualities.

I knew Cotton ever since I can remember. My.mom worked with her at thr Nickel Plant and they became friends. Mom and I always went with Cotton and Mike for trick or treat and that included a special trip to the grandmother's house where we got extra treats! Cotton was so kind. Once I put Mike on the wrong school bus home and when I went to apologize she just gave me a big hug and said okay just don't do it again (she had to leave work that day!).
Rest well dear Cotton. I like to think you and Mom are up there chatting like old times.

So sorry to hear of Cotton's passing. She was a good neighbor on Elm Street, bowled with her and was an Avon customer. She never met a stranger!!!!
