MARSHALL SMITH Obituary





MARSHALL LEE SMITH, 82, of Proctorville, Ohio, passed away December 14, 2016. Marshall was born in Rome, Ohio, to the late Lee Roy and Myrtie Pauline Smith on January 9, 1934. He attended Fairland High School, studied Engineering at Marshall University, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Marshall married Mary Lou Farris in 1957, and had two children, Gregory Lee and Dee Anna. Marshall started SCC Inc. in the early 1960s, completing many commercial jobs in the eastern United States and earning a reputation of integrity in the community. Marshall was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, and the highlight of his day was meeting with friends every morning at McDonald's. Marshall loved to travel, having visited every state in the U.S. Marshall, along with Bernard Edwards, was instrumental in the building of the Ohio University Proctorville Campus, named after his late son, Greg Smith. Marshall was a self-made man, having come from very humble beginnings. He loved to help others, and he had a very special way of making everyone feel a part of his family. He loved his Proctorville community, always there to help with his gifts and talents. Along with his parents, Marshall was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Smith, son, Gregory Lee Smith, sister, JoAnn Anderson, sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Anna Farris, daughter-in-law, Suzy Smith Tweel, special aunt, Lillian Faulkner, and Omer and Hazel Farris. He is survived by his wife, Susan Smith, daughter, Dee Anna (Tim) Rucker of Proctorville; stepdaughter, Ginger (Matt) Sly, and stepson, Buddy Marteeny of Georgetown, Ky.; son-in-law, Matt Tweel of Proctorville, Ohio; brother, Roy Smith of Dayton, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Steven (Anita) Collins of Winchester, Ky., and Sean (Lauren) Collins of South Haven, Miss.; grandchildren, Kristy (Chris) Olsen of Lenexa, Kan., Matt (Marissa) Rucker of Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rucker of Kansas City, Mo., Cassie Rucker of Huntington, W.Va., J.C. Tweel of Proctorville, Ohio, Tucker and Tillman Sly, Brady and Beckham Marteeny of Georgetown, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Capri, Heidi and Jude Olsen of Lenexa, Kan., Trevor Rucker of Dallas, Texas; and mother-in-law, Nancy Collins of Frankfort, Ky. Marshall's close friends were George Walters, Gary and Ronnie Whitley. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Ohio University Proctorville Center, Proctorville, Ohio. Following the visitation, at 7 p.m. there will be a Celebration of Life service conducted by Pastor Jason Morris. Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville, Ohio, is assisting family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to Ohio University Proctorville Center, Proctorville Volunteer Fire Department or the food pantry of your choice. This pic was taken on my visit October 13 16. Marshall and I shooting target with a 22 he was sighting in. We had just picked up at a little bait shop that belong to some friends of his. I feel blessed to have known Marshall. He was a fine man.
