Verne Watkins Obituary

DECATUR - Verne W. Watkins, 104, of Springfield, formerly of Decatur, died Sunday (July 4, 2004) in St. John's Hospital, Springfield. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Graceland Cemetery with Dr. Reg Mills officiating. Bisch & Son Funeral Home, Springfield, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: The Vern Watkins Memorial, in care of Woodlands Presbyterian Church, 11 Ecuestra Dr., Hot Springs Village, AR 71909. Mr. Watkins was born March 13, 1900, in Oconee Township, Shelby County, the son of Edward Clayton and Chloe Bartlett Watkins. He was the greens superintendent at Oak Crest Country Club. He married Zelma Six in 1919. She preceded him in death in 1979. Surviving are his grandchildren, Pat (Richard) McPheters of Hot Springs Village; Joyce (David) Copp of Springfield; Dawn (Stan) Stach of Edwardsville; Michael (Sue) Hickman of Des Moines, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and daughters, Doris Stein and Thelma Hickman.
