ANTHONY ABRAHAM Obituary

ABRAHAM ANTHONY R., was born February 25, 1911 in Youngstown, Ohio. He attended Lincoln High School in Cleveland and graduated from The University of Detroit. Growing up in less than modest means, Abraham made a vow as a young boy that if by the grace of God I ever could, I would feed the poor and help the sick. He was able to live out that vow and devoted his life to helping others and the pride of his heritage could only be matched by the size of his heart. As a tireless worker all of his life, Abraham left Chicago in 1951 and settled in Miami. Most widely known as the Chevrolet tycoon, Mr. Abraham was a very successful Lebanese-American businessman. He was an honored leader in children's philanthropy, a benefactor of numerous orphanages and children's medical facilities throughout the world including ones in Lebanon and Haiti. He was also a revered advisor to many presidents, a real-estate investor, insurance maverick and publisher/marketer extraordinaire. He was the last living member of the founding members of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, founded by Danny Thomas. Abraham was the honorary consul of Lebanon in Miami for over three decades. He was a founding member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church on Coral Way and long time parishioner of Church of the Epiphany, Miami. He was a member of the Knights of Malta, the Order of the Holy Sepulcher, the Knights of Columbus and the Knights of St. Gregory. Abraham had served on the Board of Directors of several institutions including St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Barry University and the Palmer Eye Institute. He received numerous awards and recognitions through his years including The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Syrian- Lebanese-American Man of the Year, Big Brothers Big Sisters Man of the Year for outstanding service and support, Dealer of the Year from the South Florida Auto Association, the National Order of the Cedar from the Lebanese Government and many, many more. At Abraham's 100th birthday celebration in February 2011, The Anthony R. Abraham scholarship from The American Salam Charitable Foundation was announced and February 25th was named Anthony R. Abraham Day in his home city of Coral Gables. Abraham and his late wife Genevieve devoted their lives to helping others through the Anthony R. Abraham Foundation founded in 1976. Through donations to various non-profit charities across the globe, the foundation seeks to help ease poverty, build hospitals, orphanages, and medical research facilities. His generosity is well known and greatly appreciated in the community and beyond. The foundation has provided millions to numerous worthy causes, locally and internationally for over 30 years. Among those organizations are Christopher Columbus High School, Camillus House, Miami Rescue Mission, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, America's Second Harvest, Miami Children's Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Florida Heart Research Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Alonzo Mourning Charities, Cancer Link, The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, and Boystown Catholic Charities. Most recently, The Coral Gables Museum unveiled The Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery. The foundation has also been supportive of international organizations, including The Genevieve Abraham School of Nursing, The Lebanese Hospital- Geitawi, The School for the Blind and Deaf, The Spastic Center, and The Creche St. Vincent de Paul, all in Lebanon. The Rene Moawad Foundation, The Children's International Network, Doctors without Borders, and Little Sisters of Nazareth. Through the Brothers of the Good Shepherd in Haiti, the foundation has built a school, farm and housing for the children of Haiti. Abraham was truly an institution. Throughout the latter part of his life Brian Abraham his grandson, Paulo Sosa and Janett Anda were the hands of God keeping a watchful eye on him. He is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Marie and is survived by his five children, George and Susanna Abraham, Marion Abraham- Jones, Judi Abraham-Baker, Norma Jean Abraham and Thomas G. and Susan Abraham, beloved sister, Helen Shaker of Chicago, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many other close family members and friends. Visitation is at Our Lady of Lebanon, 2055 Coral Way 305.856.7449 on Tuesday, October 25 from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with services at 8:00 pm. Abraham's life will be celebrated in a funeral mass at Church of the Epiphany, 8235 Red Road, South Miami, 305.667.4911 on Wednesday, October 26 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Lots of fond memories growing up, dinners, family gatherings. I never knew him without his cigars.

I never met Anthony, but I knew his son George. I was a runaway, and had hitchhiked to Miami with my dog in 1984. George took pity on me as he was gassing up his car at a Miami gas station. I had slept,or tried to sleep behind the store the night before. I was scared, and feeling hopeless. George took me in and I stayed at his house for a couple months. He was very kind to me. I never forgot him. In case you're reading this George, sir,I just want to say Thank you. You may not remember me, and my pain in the butt Siberian husky dog,it doesn't matter. God bless you sir.

I was blessed to be able to be there, so many years ago, at the service to celebrate his long and distinguished life. There will never be another man like Anthony Abraham for he set the example for others to follow in so many respects. When he left this earth a huge void remained, a void so great that it simply cannot be filled. I know that he would be proud that his children are doing their best to follow in his footsteps in trying to make this world a better place for children and for the less fortunate. May God forever bless the memory of this giant of a man.

Only learned about Anthony's amazing life recently. Living in Miami and being able to feel all the good the Abraham Family has done, I felt I should drop a message of remembrance and respect to the ones who started it all. The Abrahams continue to inspire their community.

Mr. Abraham gave my dad his first and only job when we moved to Tampa, Florida. I will always remember him as a very kind, loving, caring and wonderful man.

February 21, 2012

I met Mr. Abraham in the early 90's although I remember as a child, my mom taking us by his house to see the beautiful Christmas decorations in his yard. I had (naively) committed to putting on a match party for children in foster care that were free for adoption so that they could possibly find permanent homes. This party would be for a few hundred people and I had never done this before but I had a big heart. I THOUGHT I could just ask for money and because it was for a good cause companies would just give it to me. I didn't know about a 501(c) 3 and no one would help me. The party was in 2 weeks, I had no money and no idea what to do but I wasn't about to give up on my word. I don't know why I did this but for some reason I sent a letter to Anthony Abraham, explaining what a mess I had gotten myself into and asking if he could help me. His secretary (Lisette?) called me and asked me to come in for a meeting with Mr. Abraham. I was petrified because I didn't know what I was doing. When I went in I am sure he knew I was nervous but he made me feel comfortable right away. He asked me some questions and I explained what I was trying to do. He took out his checkbook and wrote me a check on the spot. I was so shocked and grateful that this man who knew nothing about me trusted me and believed in me. In a very short amount of time I was then able to collect the money that I needed because all I had to do was say that Anthony Abraham helped me and when they heard that they would make a donation. He was the first one to believe in me and I went on to do these parties for several years. Also, in our conversation he asked me if I had any children of my own. I told him that my husband and I had lost two babies. He told me he had two orphanages and that he would help me if we decided to adopt. After this first party was over I brought him an itemized statement of what I used the money for and gave him change. He told me this was the first time in all of his years of donating money that anyone gave him change back. He made such a huge impression on me and any time I have thought of him it has been with much admiration and a huge smile. What a wonderful person. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to write this. I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Abraham was a wonderful, kind man.

He was absoluely my hero and that of my children. I received no child support and he helped me numerous times by giving my son a job while trying to go to vet school and authorizing my over time and opportunities for advancement. I don't think there ever was a greater man on this earth. I dearly loved him. Mary Ann Gilley Franklin NC

He was my Godfather. He was my male role-model growing up. He taught me respect for others and for myself. Clem always made time for my Mother and I. He taught me how to behave in public and in private, but most importantly, he taught me how to behave when nobody was looking. Mr. A. was a vital part to my living in the United States and not in England. Had he not done this for me and my Mother, I would not have met my wonderful wife and I wouldn't be blessed with my three beautiful children (Anthony, Taylor, and Emma). I love him with all my heart and will miss him with as much. Rest in peace sir, you truly had a major impact on my life, and for that I will be eternally grateful. Goodbye.

Anthony Abraham was my mother-in-law's first cousin (Madeline Abraham Ghaleb from Mesreh). Where Anthony's obituary is impressive, it isn't complete. Only God Almighty has the full account of his good deeds. God Bless You, Anthony, and our condolences to his children and their children. Special regards to Norma Jean who hosted our family in her home for a visit several years ago during our stay in Florida when Anthony invited us to dine with him and some of his immediate family. I just learned of Mr. Abraham's passing on to glory. I know the Lord left him here longer for all of those who love him so. Many years ago when television was just 'starting out' when Mr. Abraham started the dealership in Miami, my father Lee Phillips (now deceased) was becoming a TV star of sorts in that market in Miami. Mr. Abraham wanted my Dad to do all his television commercials. My Dad being from Ohio too, hit it off and was fortunate enough to all the TV commercial for many years. They became friends & I remember one year our family was invited to join the Abraham 'clan' during the holidays at the Abraham home. It was a wonderful time & I was only maybe in 5th grade at the time. My heart joins each of yours remembering this most gracious man. He exhaled on this side but immediately inhaled on the other side to be with our Lord forever.

As a kid in the 50's we lived close to the Abraham's on S. Alhambra Circle. Every Christmas the Abraham's put up outrageous decorations in their front yard that attracted thousands every year. I remember the coffee cans on the fence for donations for his charities. RIP Mr. Abraham. Your contributions to mankind do not go unrecognized.

My memories of Mr. Abraham. Going to see his home in Coral Gables decorated for Christmas. I am talking about the late 1960s. It was the first time I ever saw anything like that. and #2, always looking at his building on Le Jeune and SW 8 Street. He LOVED his country, and I happened to drive by there again on Saturday night, and I looked and it wasn't the same. I thought about how much I missed that this past Saturday. Ironic.
They won't be another like him again for a long long time.

To Tony's Children,

You were all so truly adored and loved by both Tony and Genevieve. You lit up their entire lives for being a mom and a dad made their ,otherwise, rich and accomplished lives complete. I recall being at the church years ago when Genevieve was senselessly taken from your midst far too soon. At that time I saw how much you all were leaning on your dad and how much, he, in turn, was leaning on you to get through it all. Well, you all stood strong and you and your dad were given many more years together on this earth. I know how much you all appreciated those years and how much you treasured each other through it all. I will always personally recall all the many, many St. Jude's Balls with Danny Thomas and all the wonderful parties that Tony and Genevieve had at their home the night before the balls. I saw the great faith that Danny had in your dad and how your dad always came through for St. Jude's and for the children year after year after year. People like Tony and Genevieve are very, very rare in this world. I know that each of you will forever and always be thankful that you were the chosen children of these two "bigger than life" heroes. Just as God blessed and sustained your dad through so much on this earth, may he comfort and sustain each of you as you recall the countless blessings which flowed from being a child of this great man.

My Love, Prayers and Sympathy for Each of You,
